跨文化交际论文

AbstractWith the high development of globalization, the intercultural communication among countries tends to be unavoidable. We are doomed to communicate with people of different cultural backgrounds. However, the communication may be hindered by the different cultures, for example, the languages, communication styles, religions, life backgrounds, and local customs. Even the environment we live in and our personality can influence our communication. Therefore,the author makes an exploration on cultivating English major students'intercultural communicative competence(ICC). Thesis firstly explains the importance of developing intercultural communicative competence, and shows the problems of teaching students'ICC. And then it introduces the definition and elements of ICC. Finally, it talks about the importance of emphasis on exploring ways of ICC.Key words: intercultural communicative competence; cultivation; strategies摘要随着全球化进程的加速,世界各国之间的跨文化交流不可避免。

我们注定要和来自不同文化背景的人交流,沟通。

然而,不同的语言、交流方式、宗教信仰、生活背景、地方习俗等文化层面因素,以及我们的交流环境、个人习惯,都影响我们的沟通能力和方式。

因此,本文就针对英语专业学生如何培养学生跨文化交际能力进行了探索。

首先阐述培养跨文化交流能力的重要性,指出外语教学在培养学生跨文化交流能力存在的问题。

其次阐明跨文化交流能力的概念和组成部分。

最后,强调培养跨文化交流能力的策略。

关键词:跨文化交流能力,培养,策略1. IntroductionNowadays, intercultural communication is becoming increasingly important with the rapid development of the world economy and close contact among different countries. What’s more, the development of Internet is transferring the whole world into a “earth village”. So the environment today needs a well-off and convenient communication.Based on the new national English course standards for college, the overall goal of English teaching is to foster and improve the students'comprehensive competence of language performance. Globallyapproaches of language teaching are: the Method of Grammar-translation, the Direct , the Reading, the Cognitive which emphasize teaching process should focus on students'activities and the Communicate. Approach with one of its principle is “teaching should be subordinate to learning”(Richard & Rodgers, 2001). The overall goal of English teaching is to cultivate and improve the students' comprehensive competence of language performance. And the forming of this skill is based on the development of language skills,knowledge, learners' attitude, cultural awareness and learning strategies,whichconstitute comprehensive competence of language use (National Standards,2001). The main purpose of this thesis is to find the way to cultivate ICC. Acquiring knowledge and skills are the base of this ability,while cultural awareness is the guarantee of appropriate language use. Attitude is an significant factor which influences the students'learning and development of the competence of self-study.2.About International Communication Competence (ICC)For English teaching plays an importantpart in intercultural contact and communication, students must be familiar with culture of both home and abroadso thatthey can frequently communicate with people from other countries. Students should have the ability to use various methods for contacting those from other cultures.So,one of the goal of English teaching is to develop students' intercultural communicative competence.2.1 Definition of ICCIntercultural communication is a kind of communication behavior betweenpeople who have different culture or between people and groups in regular occasion.It always means people from different culture implies a contrast between cultures.Intercultural communicative competence is defined in a good deal of studies as the competence to gain effective achievements in intercultural communication situations. Naturally, intercultural communication is closely related to culture. Communication misreading may happen as a result of different cultural surroundings.So,culture plays a pivotal role in the successful international communication. This definition shows ICC means selecting proper behavior according todifferent cultural situations.2.2 Importance of ICCNow, it's more effortless for students to communicate with people from different culture. International communication will be necessary in their life. It will offer them opportunities to learn cultures from all corner of the world,which they had never noticed in the past.Therefore there is a need for them to study language and culture which begin from the kindergarten to their grown-up life to train their intercultural awareness and develop their intercultural competence.In the past manyyears,intercultural communication competence has become an important research area in intercultural communicative studies and also delivered a great deal of literature. As more and more people realize the significance of the communicative competence,teacherwill pour more and more attentioninto the development of intercultural communicative teaching,and make the students be equipped with intercultural communicative and language competence at the same time.2.3 Components of ICCICC is the ability to communicate effectively with people from other cultures,so it is the key to successful intercultural communication. To get this competence, students need to develop intercultural awareness,interculturalattitudes ,intercultural knowledge and interculturalskills.Intercultural attitude refer to one's attitude to various cultures,and he is ready to accept them, to some extend it will be easier for him to acquire intercultural communication competence. Just as the famous saying goes," attitude decides everything ". Intercultural attitude is the basefactor of intercultural communicationcompetence.Intercultural knowledge meansthe knowledge of one' s own cultures such as customs,beliefsandvalues. With it,students can take full advantages of their learned language. Intercultural skills refer the ability to use the new-learned knowledge into practicing in a current time occasion. Intercultural awareness means thinking something as people of the target culture. The improvement of awareness involves the ability to identify and transfer values into another culture and the ability to interact and harmonize in intercultural communication.3.Cultivating ICCWhen learners are learning target language culture, they will gradually build up ability to adapt themselves to the new situation, which will help them gain successful intercultural communication not only their language expression but behaviors are receivable in the target language culture. So, the best way to cultivate the students' intercultural communicative awareness and competence is to absorb culture learning into language teaching.3.1 Selecting Proper Teaching MaterialThe role of textbook material is just as important as the roles of teachers in the process of cultivating students ' s ICC. Materials are essential in cultivating the ICC. If students are given more access to various materials of target culture, the cultural learning could be more aspiring and high-efficiency. As we know, language is closely related to culture. In addition, materials in a language program should notice the relationship between the target language and culture. The target of language teaching: listening skills, writing skills, reading skills and speaking skills can be realizedby using textbooks and audio materials. In some textbooks from other countries,there are a lot of material that cover the information about the cultural background and customs of native-speaking countries.3.2.Developing Students ' Intercultural AwarenessWe have already realized that intercultural communication is a necessity for many facets. But this is far from enough if we only realize the significance of intercultural communication. As we have just mentioned,we should absorb culture teaching in language teaching. The key to intercultural communication is to understand cultural differencesAccording to Chen and Starosta (1996), cultural awareness refers to anunderstanding of one's own and others' cultures that influence how people think and behave. This includes understanding similarities of human behavior and differences in cultural patterns.Development of cultural awareness means a process that starts with no understanding of some culture tocultural respect and fusion.The following goals are a modifications of Ned Seely's "seven goals of cultural instruction "(Joyce,1986).(1)To help students to develop an understanding of the fact that all people exhibit culturally-conditional behaviors.(2)To help students to develop an understanding of social variables such as age sex social class and place of residence,the ways in which people speak and behavior.(3)To help students to become more aware of conventional behavior in common situations in the target language(4) To help students to increase their awareness of the cultural connotations of words and phrases in the target language.(5)To help students to develop the ability to evaluate and refine generalizations about the target culture,in terms of supporting evidence.(6)To help students to develop the necessary skills to locate and organize information about the target culture.(7)To stimulate student 's intellectual curiosity about the target culture,and to encourage empathy towards its people5. ConclusionFrom all the above,we consider it very important to cultivate intercultural communicative competence. What is the most important for students is to grasp English as a communication tool. So the finalgoal of language teaching is to assist students to develop communicative competence,which is the key for people to avoid culture shock.When students are in the classroom,English teachers should spare no effort to create a natural,simple and entertaining environment for them.In the meantime,English teachers should also pay more attention to our cultural behavior or belief for the sake of making the teaching more effective.To sum up ,some methods mentioned previously have been taken to help the students learn about various cultures and enlarge their cultural knowledge,to enhance their enthusiasm in English learning and to increase their cultural awareness anddevelop their intercultural communicative competence.It is hard for teachers to choose the details of culture and to make a balance of language teaching and culture teaching during the teaching process.But we still need to pay enough attention to it.At a word, it is teachers' responsibility to help students to acquire English culture and help them to acquire intercultural communicative competence.References[1] Edward, T.
