The forum, themed “China and the new Asian Century”, shows the great concern over the prospects of the development of china and Asia, and the roles of china and Asia in the global economy.第10周At the north end of the Houses of Parliament is a big tower – the famous clock tower known as Big Ben. Big Ben is really the name of the bell inside. It is named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was in charge of the new parliament building in 1859. big Ben has been chiming for more than a century. It started chiming on June 11, 1859. The clock that regulates the chiming of Big Ben keeps good time.在议会大厦的北端,有一座高塔,这就是有名的“大本钟”。
“大本”实际上是塔内那口大钟的名字。
而这口钟又是根据本杰明·霍尔爵士的名字命名的。
1859年,他负责建造这座新的大厦。
大本钟从1859年6月11日开始鸣响,到现在已有一个多世纪了。
钟塔里的钟很准时。
珠江原来是很宽的,人们把轮渡过江叫“过海”。
我们现在走的这条沿江路原来是珠江的一部分。
后来人们逐渐填海造地盖房子,珠江才慢慢变成这么窄。
传说很早的时候,珠江河里靠近现在广州儿童图书馆的地方有一个石头小岛,实际上是一块大岩石。
由于河水的冲刷,它表面光滑、形圆如珠,人们借此称这条河为珠江。
后来,由于前面所说的,人们填海造地盖房,这块岩石也被填为陆地一部分了。
从此,这颗“珠”就不存在了,但是它的美名却仍然流传千古。
The Pearl River used to be rather ,and people called it “crossing the sea “ when they ferried across it. The site of this road we are on used to be part of the river. People reclaimed the riverside for land to put up houses. The river was gradually narrowed to the status quo.It was said that there was a huge piece of rock in the river near the present-day Guangzhou Children’s Liabrary, which looked as round and smooth as pearl due to the sustained wash of the surging water, thus giving rise to the name.The “pearl”disappeared resulting form the reclamation,but the graceful name has come down with history.第11周China’s tourism will earn42.6 billion dollars in foreign exchange revenue with the annual average growth of nearly 8% and it is expected to be ranked third worldwide. 1.69 billion tourists will travel in china, representing an average 8% increase annually; the revenue from the domestic tourism will reach 881 billion yuan with an increase of 11% on the average every year; the tourism earnings will total 1.226 trillion yuan ,up 10%, representing 7% of GDP ; tourism will create 9.8 million direct and 49 million indirect job opportunities.中国旅游创汇将达426亿元,年均增长8%左右,有望居世界第三位;国内旅游人数16.9亿人次,年均增长8%;国内旅游收入8810亿元,年均增长11%左右,旅游业总收入12260亿元,年均增长10%左右,相当于全国国内生产总值的7%;旅游带动直接就业980万人,间接就业4900万人。

从 1978年到 2004 年的 26 年间,中国国内生产总值从 1473 亿美元增长到16494 亿美元,年均增长9.4%;进出口总额从 206 亿美元增长到 11548 亿美元,年均增长超过16%;国家外汇储备从1.67 亿美元增长到6099 亿美元;农村贫困人口由2.5 亿人减少到2600 万人,中国的综合国力显著增强,人民生活不断改善。
中国人民在继承和发扬古老文明的基础上创造了新的历史。
Since 1949, when the New China was proclaimed, and particularly since the implementation of reform and opening-up program pioneered by Mr. Deng Xiaoping in1978, China has undergone a profound transformation never seen in the country before. In a short span of 26 years from 1978 to 2004, China's GDP increased from 147.3 billion US dollars to 1.6494 trillion US dollars with an average annual growth rate of 9.4 percent. Its foreign trade rose from 20. 6 billion US dollars to 1.1548 trillion US dollars, averaging an annual growth rate of over 16 percent. China's foreign exchange reserve increased from 167 million US dollars to 609.9 billion US dollars. The number of rural poor has dwindled from some 250 million to 26 million. The overall national strength of China has increased remarkably and the texture of life of its people improved steadily. While inheriting and carrying forward their proud past, the 1.3 billion Chinese people are writing a new chapter in history as they march of one mind on the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.第12周Geographically, Beijing is located in the northern part of the North China Plain, surrounded by mountains on the north, east, and west. The city covers an area of 16,800 square kilometers, or 6486 square miles. The annual temperature averages 11.9 degrees Centigrade. Annual rainfall averages 24 inches, or 696 millimeters. Beijing has a population of more than 10 million; over 6 million in the urban area, and nearly 4 million on the outskirts. The city of Beijing consists of 4 urban districts, 6 suburban districts and 9 outlying counties.北京地处华北平原北部,北、东、西3面环山。
