Analysis can now answer questions around 'Why did it happen.' This may include comparison of results for marketing initiatives, deductions by carrier based on delivery times, claims losses by given procedure codes, or customer satisfaction by various customer service reps. There is an increase in ad-hoc queries from prior levels. Deeper analytics and modeling are being tried on an experimental basis, primarily with applications outside the warehouse.

Analysis is focused on individual business unit and its product sales and total revenues to try to determine 'What happened.' Workload on the system is primarily batch with predefined queries. Reports are designed to produce operational metrics and track results for the current time period and are limited to any history that may be generally available. Data are stored at summary level for past reporting periods and are generally considered adequate for period-over-period comparisons.
Business intelligence is extended to ask ‘What do I want to happen?' and ‘Making it happen'. Event-based triggering takes hold in the organization. Information flows to real-time processes that automate the routine transactions, leaving personnel free to look for operational exceptions and new opportunities. Near real-time information is provided to internal organizations, suppliers, and clients to support their business needs.
