As the accelerating development of globalization and the broadening exchange of personnel among various countries, the “head drain” phenomenon has induced the unease of numerous enterprises. As a result, the topic on the qualification of staff, especially the comparison between generalists and professionals, has ignited heated discussion.
Some people appreciate generalists. As the old Chinese saying goes “reading thousands of books is not as good as travelling thousands of
mil es”. Not only could more skills highlight personal advantages, but also adapt to the social development.Others treasure professionals. Concentrating on one task produces more accesses to conversance and success. The mastery of a professional craft attributes to progress on the study and the job, which makes us stand out among numerous talents.
As far as I am concerned, a real expert can’t neglect qualities for neither generalists nor professionals. Professionals don’t deny knowledge on other disciplines, but have profound understanding on numbers of aspects. Similarly, generalists can also be familiar with a special field. For instance, Leonardo Da Vinci is a renowned painter. Meanwhile, he is also recognized as a sculptor, investor and therapist. Without t hose necessary references to other disciplines, he can’t create vivid works. His renowned drawing The Vitruvian Man, showing the ideal human proportions, is based on Geometry and historical knowledge. Einstein, Planck, the most prominent scientists in the 20th century, both love music, which bring them inspiration and pleasure. And The Co-founder of Apple Inc. Steve Jobs also contributes his success to his technical expertise and the passion of art.
Therefore, from my point of view, it is not a dilemma of focusing on a specific area or not. One field can be regarded as a lifetime career, and meanwhile, other knowledge can become hobbies nourishing our soul. Qian Xuesen, the famous scientist had a question in his later life, “Why can't we cultivate top-notch talent?” Maybe, it is a key answer of rediscovering the relation of profession and general knowledge.。
