Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England in 1812. He had a happy childhood. At the age of 12, Dickens had to leave school because his father was in prison for debt. He wrote about 15 major novels and many short stories, most of which are famous for their surprise endings. He died in 1870. His tomb reads, “By his death, one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”
