本文通过对中国现代化进程中竞技体育的深入研究和具体分析，主要运用文献资料法、理论分析法、逻辑分析法和比较法，尝试概括各个阶段现代化和竞技体育的发展特征，总结了我国现代化进程中竞技体育发展的启示。
全文共分为五个部分。
第一部分引言中，笔者对研究这一问题的缘起、意义、学术界的研究状况和本文的研究方法进行了简明扼要的说明。
第二部分：笔者对本文中所涉及的“竞技体育”和“现代化”两个概念进行了界定和说明。
认为本研究课题中，竞技体育的界定既包括职业运动员高水平的竞技运动，也含有大众的业余的竞技体育活动。
认为中国的现代化道路属于外源的现代化类型，各种社会矛盾和动荡的发生是集中的、急速的、大幅度的，经历的曲折与反复较多。
第三部分：分别对新中国成立前后竞技体育在中国现代化进程中各阶段的发展特征进行了概括。
新中国成立前，中国现代化进程中竞技体育发展特征：1840—1911 年，改良式现代化进程的顿挫，近代中国竞技体育的起步；1911—1928 年，革命性巨变之后的探索，近代中国竞技体育的发展；1928—1937年，三种现代化发展道路的分野，近代中国竞技体育的分化；1937—1949 年，现代化发展范式的转换，近代中国竞技体育的低谷。
新中国成立后，中国现代化进程中竞技体育发展特征：1949—1956 年，社会主义现代化发展范式确立，竞技体育新模式初现端倪；1956—1965 年，中国现代化建设的曲折探索，竞技体育的“马鞍形”发展；1966—1976 年，传统社会主义现代化发展范式的深刻危机，竞技体育的发展波折重重；1976—1992 年，现代化进程的伟大转折，竞技体育优先战略的运行；1992 年至今，沿着中国特色的现代化道路勇往直前，竞技体育深化改革高水平竞技成绩斐然。
第四部分：总结我国现代化进程中竞技体育发展的启示。
经济现代化是竞技体育发展的决定因素；政治现代化是竞技体育发展的基础因素；思想现代化是竞技体育发展的引导因素；法制现代化是竞技体育的发展的保障因素；科技现代化是竞技体育发展的动力因素；宣传现代化是竞技体育发展的助力因素；人才现代化是竞技体育发展的主导因素；错误的现代化思潮是竞技体育发展的误导因素。
第五部分为结语。
