For one thing, in this chapter, as Ellison himself said, "The boys are blindfolded and forced to fight each other for the amusement of the white observers. " The blacks were treated with utter contempt and hatred. The scene is symbolic of the place of all American black people in the whitedominated rst-person narration is used in this chapter. "I" is the narrator, not the author, of the story. This narrator is at the same time, the protagonist. This immediate and compelling quality of the firstperson narration enables the reader to follow the action of the story closely as if it were taking place before his eyes. It can also allow the reader to know what is going on in the mind of the narrator. The first-person narration helps to achieve the artistic effect in the description of the battle royal. In addition, this novel is an account of the boy' s journey from ignorance to enlightenment as he searches for his self-identity. Most of the activities inevitably become psychological, and therefore the first person narration creates authenticity.

IV. Questions (Appreciation) 1. The chapter begins with "it goes a long way back, some twenty years', showing the following parts are his reflection of the past. In the first paragraph, the main idea of searching for identity is conveyed by "I was looking for myself" and "I am nobody but myself. What happens in the battle royal is related to the central idea.

For a third, in this battle royal he i.s isolated from both the white and the black, and the reflection of his dilemma is recurring later in his search for identity.
2. The story begins with a flashback paragraph. By saying "it goes a long way back, some twenty years", the author tells the reader that the story took place in the past. It shows that the narrator has reached a certain stage of his life when he deems it necessary to look back at a past event that was meaningful to him. Moreover, it shows that his account of the past experience will be more mature and objective.
