•A strat unit is the interval between two surfaces. Strat units are defined by

Chapter 7: Defining Lithology and Analyzing Sand/Shale Presenter Title Landmark Graphics Corporation
Part No. 625579 Rev. J
7-1
Defining Lithology and Analyzing Sand/shale
• StratWorks makes it easy for you to calculate lithologic or fluid intervals at wells based on log characteristics.
• You can also quickly analyze the sand and shale content of stratigraphic units and map the results.
7-5
Defining Strat Units
• Column type determines how the strat unit will be posted in this and other applications. • There are 7 types of columns:
Litho-Stratigraphic (the default) Depositional Environment Chrono-Stratigraphic Bio-Stratigraphic Petrophysical Sequence-Strat User

Strat Column Editor: Re-visited
Since strat units are needed to map results from sand/shale analysis, you will return to the Strat Column Editor to create them before beginning Lithology calculations.

Overview
In this chapter, you learn to
• • • • • • • • • • Define stratigraphic and well units set criteria for defining lithologic and fluid intervals apply those criteria to multiple wells to generate calculated lithologic intervals refine or override calculated lithology where necessary set sand and shale baselines use those baselines to perform an automated sand/shale analysis of strat units define the strat units needed for mapping the results of sand/shale analysis, and generate the map generate a lithology curve based on your lithology calculations display lithology filled curves generate and post lithology pie charts

Training Workflow
Build template for use in Correlation displays Complete the interpretation by interpreting missing picks. Modify the strat column by inputting units derived from existing surfaces. Do Lithology and Sand/Shale calculations. Rebuild structure and isochore maps based on completed interpretation.
Regardless of which Column Type you select, you can set the Unit Fill Type to either Lithology Pattern, Depositional Environment, or Color Fill.
• All columns of a given type are drawn in a single component column of the stratigraphic column. For example, all chrono-stratigraphic units will be in one column, all litho-stratigraphic units in another column, etc.
Bounding surfaces are the top and ba unit. You cannot create a unit unless its bounding surfaces already exist in the stratigraphic column.
