In 1996-1997 the Irish government extended free education to cover all public uniersities,as is common in most of European courtries.
As a result,today the Irish education system is among the cheapest and best in Europe - but the universities themselves complain they are chronically(长期地) starved for funding .It should be noted that “free” edcation at Irish universities is open only to established Irish residents.

In Ireland,edcation is compulsory(义务的) for children aged 6 to 15 . All children in the Republic must learn the Irish language. The education system is administered centrally by the Department of Education which provides the bulk of current and capital funding.
