Intercultural Communication

ICC refers to the communication between people of different cultures. ICC can happen between groups at different levels, such as national, racial or ethnic groups as well as other groups identified by gender, generation, region, age, education, occupation and religion, etc. study of ICC is interdisciplinary, associated with other fields, primarily linguistics, anthropology, international relations, sociology, psychology and etc.

Course Objectives

To acquire knowledge related to ICC (terminologies and definitions); To understand how communication processes differ among cultures and improve your intercultural awareness;

Preview the text, looking up the new words and expressions before class, and come prepared to share your opinions and questions. The course intends to improve your intercultural communication competence. You are expected to actively answer questions and participate in class discussions. Ask questions when you do not understand. Attend class regularly. Repeated unexcused absences or late arrivals will lower your grade average. Inform me in advance if you need to miss class for a legitimate reason and do not forget to give me the note for leave with a stamp or a signature. Students are responsible for all information, assignments, and activities for all classes. Turn your cell phone off and do not check it for calls or text messages during class.

1946: Foreign Service Institute was established in the US 1959: The Silent Language by Edward T. Hall, an American anthropologist, was published, marking the emergence of ICC 1966: ICC was regarded as curriculum in the US 1970: ICC was recognized as an independent area of study by the International Communication Association
