The Ivies are all in the northeast geographic region of the U.S. All eight schools receive millions of dollars in research grants(补助金) and other subsidies(津贴) from federal and state government.

• In front of University Hall is the famous Statue of John Harvard, also known as the Statue of the Three Lies:
as the best national university in each of the
past fifteen years ending with the 2015 rankings: Princeton eight times, Harvard twice and the two schools tied for first five times.
The origin of the name
•Many language experts believe that the term Ivy League first appeared in the media. In the nineteenthirties, a sports reporter called the schools in the grouping, the "Ivy League." The group also had an unofficial name -- "The Ancient Eight." Now both names are used. However, the NCAA(National Collegiate Athletic Association 全国大学体育协会) officially uses the term Ivy League.

The origin of the name
• Some people say the term is linked to the ivy plant. And ivy does cover some of the grounds and buildings at the schools.
• Other people say the term dates back to when only four of the schools were part of the sports group. The number four was written in roman numerals, the letters "I" and "V."

Ivy League schools are generally viewed as some of the most prestigious schools, and are ranked among the best universities worldwide. The term Ivy League also has connotations(隐含意义) of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism(精英主义).

The Ivy League is an athletic conference(体育赛事联 盟)comprising eight private institutions(私立学校) of higher education in the Northeastern United States. The conference name is also commonly used to refer to those eight schools as a group.
