Introduction
In English, there is a governing principle that rejects redundancy. Wilson Follett calls “the maxim against redundancy”, insisting that no idea should be expressed twice in the same passage. In English, sentences that present as new information something that has just been said , or that is plainly implied in what has just been said, are considered a waste of the reader’s time. The more frequently such sentences occur, the more they clog the flow of ideas and the more annoying they become.

Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects in outline, but that every word tell.(P14)
