Should We Ban Internet Slang in News and Formal Documents?
Faced with the situation that we frequently read the words in the newspapers or on the Internet such as “dinosaurs” for ugly women, and “PK” for competition. Whether to allow or forbid these terms in news and formal documents has become a hot topic as the ban is introduced in Shanghai because these words are now forbidden in Shanghai’s official documents. From where I stand, I am delighted to witness the appearance of such a revolutionary regulation. Internet slang should not be banned in news and formal documents.
Firstly, the use of Internet slang in news and formal documents will have a bad effect on the standard use of Chinese characters. Chinese language has its own beauty and principles while Internet slangs are too casual and do not acquire these qualities. As news and formal documents has a wide effect on public, the use of Internet slang in news and formal documents, in some respect, seems to encourage people to use Internet slang. As a result, Internet slang will not only be found in Internet communication, it will be misused in our daily life.
Secondly, some internet slangs are from foreign culture and this may have kind of cultural penetration, which we should avoid. One of the basic requirement for news and formal documents is that they can be well understood by receivers, this goal, however, will become difficult to reach if Internet slang were used wildly in them. News and formal documents are the platforms of the government and institution to speak out opinions and propaganda ideas to the public, so the words and expressions used in news and formal documents must be of very careful selection. What’s more, in formal documents, to guarantee the strictness and standard ability of the paper, oral expressions are not allowed to use, which also means that Internet slang should not be used neither.
To sum up, we should definitely ban internet slangs in news and formal documents. We public should try our best to protect our own traditional Chinese culture and language and carefully selected words used in news and formal documents just like we wouldn’t choose slippers or shorts to attend in a party.。
