Course description




This course will introduce the basics of intercultural communication, probe into the differences between countries in verbal and nonverbal communication, the emergence of “culture shock” and how to cultivate intercultural communication skills in the multi-culture arena. This course aims to increase students' intercultural communication competence, facing cultural diversity and major challenges in communication so that students can develop confidence to succeed in modern workplace. It aims to develop some basic form of cultural criticism in the students. This is mainly a discussion seminar and students are encouraged to contribute their ideas, experiences and opinions in class. A wide range of communicative activities will be employed, encouraging students to think critically. At the end of course, students are expected to develop their oral communication skills as well as cultural awareness, to enhance their general abilities in learning and research., to develop their cross-cultural awareness of self and others and appreciation for diversity and help them to foster a global mindset.

Objectives/ Course Goals:


Foreign language learners should manage to become a modern man with the knowledge of intercultural communication. After learning intercultural communication, students can increase their awareness and tolerance of cultural differences and construct a theoretical structure of intercultural communication and conduct effective and appropriate communication. The learners will understand their own culture much better and look at the foreign culture with an objective way. Furthermore, learning this course will help students learn some basic characteristics of western culture and basic concepts in intercultural communication. It also helps students predict the communication pattern of people from another country and solve the problems accordingly. On the other hand, students language skills,for example, expressing ideas and writing skills will be improved. The goal is to enable students to become not only an excellent bilingual, but also an objective bicultural.
