Good evening, Ladies and gentlemen,it’s my great honor to be your local guide. Today, we are going to visit the Chengdu Wuhou Temple. before we get in I should give you some information about China’s history , which makes you have a better understanding about the temple. China experienced a lot of dynasties .But there is a period which is very famous .that is the Three kingdomsPeriod .Ok, ladies and gentlemen I will ask you a question first before telling you what happened in that period .Did you read a famous Chinese classic novel named the Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Maybe someone did but some didn’t . Actually , this book is about what happened at that time.At the end of eastern Han dynasty, the emperor[ˈempərə]was very atrocious [əˈtroʃəs]残暴的and treated his civilians百姓very bad .He just knew how to play and flirt [flɚt]调情,玩弄with women .His civilians were very angry with him. At last, lots of peasants[ˈpɛzənt]农民rebellions[riˈbeliənz]反抗broke out .However, the generals将军of Han dynasty didn’t help the bad emperor suppre ss 镇压that, instead of taking this opportunity to establish their own kingdoms. Thus lots of wars happened among the generals .You can imagine the chaotic [keɪˈɑ:tɪk]一片混乱的society of that time. After several years’ fighting, only three kingdoms survived .they were Wei , Shu and Wu. Here I particularly need to mention the Shu kingdom. Actually it was theancient name of Sichuan province. That’s why you can enjoy the rich culture of Shu kingdom in Sichuan province .The temple here is to commemorate[kəˈmɛməˌret] 纪念two famous persons .One is the emperor of Shu kingdom .His name is Liu Bei .Another is Zhu Geliang, the Prime minister of LiuBei .More details will be given to you when we get in .ladies and gentlemen ,please look up at the horizontal[ˌhɔ:rəˈzɑ:ntl]水平的board on the top of the gate .You can see four Chinese characters, That is Han Zhaolie Miao which means Han Zhaolie T emple in English .Han is the ancient name of Shu kingdom. Zhaolie is LiuBei’s posthumous[ˈpɒstjʊməs] 死后的title the people gave .Now I know there is a question in your mind. The temple we will visit is Wuhou Temple not Han Zhaolie Temple . Do we come the wrong door? Absolutely not .In Tang and Song dynasties, there were two temples belonged to Liu Bei and Zhu Geliang respectively各自的. Unfortunately more and more people went to Zhu’s temple for worship尊敬. They thought Zhu’s contribution was superior[su:ˈpɪriə(r)]较高的to LiuBei, the emperor. Thus fewer people went to Liu Bei’s temple. In Ming dynasty ,a member of imperial[ɪmˈpɪriəl]皇家的family thought that was improper不合适的because Liu Bei was the emperor .Zhu Geliang was only a subordinate [səˈbɔ:rdɪnət]部下of him .He demolished摧毁theZhu’s Temple and moved Zhu Geliang’s statues[s'tætʃu:z]雕像into Liu Bei’s. however this behavior could not be accepted by other people ,especially those who worshiped Zhu Geliang very much. They spontaneously[spɔnˈtenɪəslɪ]自发的built up a temple behind this one .and called it Wuhou Temple .Gradually, people were used to call like that. Later When we get in you will find that .Ladies and gentlemen, now you are standing in the axis [ˈæksɪs]轴线line of the temple .You know Chain’s architecture[ˈɑ:rkɪtektʃə(r)]建筑学considered symmetry[ˈsɪmɪtri]对称美 .So you can find that there is a tablet碑on either side .On your right is Tang Tablet. It is also called “San Jue” tablet. San means three in English, Jue means excellence卓越 .What are the excellence you may ask ? First one is the article composed创作by the prime minister of Tang dynasty .second is the calligraphy[kəˈlɪɡrəfi]书法written by a very famous calligrapher in Tang dynasty .Third one is the carving雕刻. That is marvelous非凡的.On your left that is Ming Tablet. Strangely you will find that the tablet is on the back of an animal Do you know what is the animal carrying the tablet? Turtle乌龟? No! It is called “Bi Xi”赑屃(bìxì)霸下. Legend said, Dragon has 9 sons, and the sixth is Bi Xi. For Bi Xi is very strong, people let him carry the stele.Ladies and gentlemen, we are getting cross over Second Gate and going to visit LiuBei’s hall .Now you may find that on either sidethere is a corridor 走廊with lots of statues雕像.that’s right .On your right that is Ministers大臣statues ; on your left that is Generals statues. All of the figures are from Shu kingdom .they did great contribution to his country .Let’s go and have a visit .Now the building in front you is Liu Be i’s hall. Maybe you have noticed that there is a small room on either side of the hall .Ok let’s visit that first from left to right .ladies and gentlemen ,the statue you see is ZhangFei .you can see he had a black face. Actually black refers to honesty and justice in China . it is said that he is a handsome man .because he had a very bad temper and treated his subordinates very bad as a result of being killed by his subordinates. The other one is Guan Yu’s room. Let’s have a look. Guan was a general of Shu kingdom. You may ask me why Guan Yu was dressing like a emperor? That is connected with GuanYu’ sense of honor. People regarded him as the emperor of the sense of honor . GuanYu and Zhang Fei are sworn宣过誓的,感情极深的brothers of Liu Bei. There is a hall only to commemorate the three brothers in Wuhou Temple . More details will be given to you when we get there .Let’s enter in Liu Bei’s hall. The statue is the biggest one among the others. In the novel, Liubei is characterized by his big ears. It is believed the one who owns a pair of big ears always has good fortune. Do we have any big ears around? Oh, yah! He isour lucky star. The board holding in the King’s hands is called “Yu Gui”. It is made of jade[dʒed]玉. The 7 dippers on it stands for the highest power. Liubei died in 62, governing the state for 2 years only. His son “A Dou” Liuchan carried on for 40 years. At the right side of him standing the statue of his grand son Liu Chen,So at the left side should be the statue of his son. But, where is it? When State Wei invading侵略Shu, Liu Chen tried to persuade his father A Dou fight to the last, and not to give up. But his father didn’t listen to him. The moment Wei army broke into Chengdu. Liu Chen killed his family and then suicide[ˈsu:ɪsaɪd]自杀. But his father A Dou was living happily after given in, and totally forgot the shame. From him comes the saying: “too happy to remember Shu”乐不思蜀. People hate A Dou, not willing to memorize him, so there is no statue for him.Follow me, after visited the King, we finally came to the Wu Hou Shrine[ʃraɪn]圣陵. Have you noticed that the Wuhou Shrine is slightly lower than where we are standing? Again, this is to show the social status. Come into the hall, we can see Zhugeliang waving his famous feather fan, dressed in ordinary clothes. This was the typical costume服装of literates’文人during Han Dynasty. The two boys standing besides, one is holding a book, the other holding a sward. Zhugeliang is one of the greatest militarists['mɪlɪtərɪst]军事家of China. The hall is decorated in austere[ɔ:ˈstɪr]朴素的, which represents his personality.Zhugeliang also named Kong Ming was born in Shangdong province, an official family. He left home, went to the mountainside of Longzhong, and built a cottage[ˈkɑ:tɪdʒ]小屋to study along. Been regarded as Crouching Dragon,he knew the outside world well, without step out of his door. He is also respected as one of the greatest strategist[ˈstrætədʒɪst]战略家and statesman政治家in Chinese’ history. During his 30 years serving as Prime Minister of Shu, he contributed greatly to the development of Sichuan. He organized the maintenance of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, improved the growing of brocade[broˈked] and salt industry, and encouraged the education of minority. He was died of illness, in the age of 54, on the way of punitive[ˈpjunɪtɪv]令人受苦的expedition[ˌɛkspɪˈdɪʃən]远征to Wei.Years passed, Zhugeliang has been respected as the god of pleasure. On the 1st day of lunar year, people will gather here to hold a ceremony to memorize him. Besides Zhugeliang is his son and grand son. They both serve the country, and died in fighting.Behind this hall is the “3 Brother’s Temple”. As I said, Liubei, Guanyu and Zhangfei were very good friends. When they are still ordinary people, they become sworn brothers in a peach garden. Here we can see their statues dressed in common. To the end of this red-walled lane[len]小路, is the tomb[tum]坟墓of Liu Bei. The lane is the typical design of Chinese garden – red wall and black tile. The face on the tile[taɪl]瓦片is lion. It is called “Wa Dang”. It has the function of threatening恐吓evils. Bamboo at both side of the corridor is called Wide leafage['li:fɪdʒ] bamboo, which is a unique of Sichuan province. There are in total of 400 kinds of bamboo, among them 240 kinds could be found in Sichuan.Well, after my introduction, are you eager to visit Wuhou Temple?Do not hesitate to have a look.。
