Background
In writing the novel, Montgomery was inspired by notes she had made as a young girl, about a couple who adopted an orphan girl by mistake instead of the boy they had requested. She was also inspired by the “formula Ann” orphan stories which were popular at the time.

Unfortunately , Matthew dies of a heart attack after hearing that all his money has been lost in a bank failure. Anne is so grieved. She gives up her study and decides to be a teacher in her hometown so that she can look after Marilla. Gilbert knows that Anne needs a job in her hometown, so he gives his teaching position to Anne. And then they become friends.

This story tells about friendship, responsibility and love. Anne is a tragic girl, but she is still optimistic and outgoing. She sends happiness to the green gable farm.
