中文系目前有全国最完整的中国语言文学学科建制，共有5个本科专业方向，8个博士学位授予点，并设有1个博士后流动站。
1986年5个二级学科——古代文学、现当代文学、汉语言文字学、语言学与应用语言学、古典文献学入选首批全国重点学科。
2001年6个二级学科——古代文学、现当代文学、汉语言文字学、语言学与应用语言学、古典文献学、比较文学与世界文学入选第二届全国重点学科，也成为了教育部最早确认的国家文科人才培养基地。
2007年中国语言文学学科整体被评为全国首批一级重点学科。
目前，部分二级学科已步入世界学术一流阵营，为进一步建设为名副其实的世界一流中国语言文学学科打下来良好基础。
自2011年英国QS发布“现代语言”和“语言学”学科排名以来，始终居于第5-25名之间。
2018年公布的“QS世界大学学科排名”中“现代语言”列第6位，“语言学”列第10位，在目前国内闯入世界前10名一流学科方阵的7个学科中占据2席。
中文系也是国内唯一细分并具有中国文学、汉语言、古典文献学、应用语言学(中文信息处理)、汉语言文学(留学生)5个中文本科专业的学科院系。
拥有中国古文献研究中心和中国语言学研究中心2个教育部人文社会科学重点研究基地，教育部全国高等院校古籍整理工作委员会秘书处挂靠北大中文系。
此外还设有在国内外具重要影响的国学研究院、国际汉学家研修基地、中国诗歌研究院、语文教育研究所等14个研究机构。
教学情况中文系现有在校全日制学生1204人，其中本科生585人，硕士生342人，博士生277人。
另有中文双学位本科生200多人。
开设本科课程185门，其中必修课40门，本科公共课18门。
本科教育按照文学、语言、古典文献、应用语言学、留学生汉语言文学5个中文本科专业实施教学。
另外我系还承担全校公共必修课大学国文。
开设研究生课程126门，其中必修课28门，承担的通识教育课程、大类平台课程等，在全校通选课程中大约占据30%的课程量。
科研情况2013—2017年底，本学科每年都新增一批国家社科、教育部和北京市的重大和重点研究项目，其中国家和省部重要项目55项。
中文系利用自有资金设立自主科研专项计划，基本实现了教师人人有项目，个个有经费的良好局面。
2012—2017年，全系四年来发表各类科研成果超过2400项，其中专著200余本，编著(以书代刊)125余本，论文2100余篇。
四年内C刊规格以上发表总量800余篇，其中A类期刊发表数量达240余篇，名列国内第一。
2013年教育部第六届高校科研成果二等、三等奖共8项，2015年第七届高校科研成果奖二等奖5项，数量和等级在国内中文学科居前。
人员情况全系现有教职工106人，行政教辅人员10人，教师96人。
其中新体制副教授8人，新体制预聘副教授、助理教授4人，老体制教授和研究员54人，副教授和副研究员30人。
