• e.g.: • I missed the start of the exam because my bus was late. • You should leave early if you want to miss the rush hour. • I'm trying to find an excuse for missing the office party. • He didn't miss his wallet until the waiter brought the bill. • Miss: to notice that something is lost or absent. • 参考译文:少一两粒宝石是绝不会知道的。
• 13. He is ignorant to a proverb. • proverb: well known. to a proverb:nctual to a proverb. • 14. The man was generous to a fault. • to a fault: to an excessive degree. • 译文:他过于宽大。 • 15. There was no living in the island. • 译文:那岛不能居住。 • 评析:There is no + -ing 是一个特定结构,意 为“无法做某事”、“不可能做某事”,相当 于“It is impossible to do ……”,或者相当于 “Nobody can …… ” • There is no blocking the wheel of history.

• 费解句:
• 因为某些词法、句法不太符合中国 读者和译者的思维模式、句法模式, 因此便觉得其难,理解破费周折, 稍不小心就容易译错。
• 1. One or two of the jewels would never be missed.
• 32. One observer believed Kissinger's genius was an ability to tell nine different stories to nine people, and keep them all straight. • them: 指代“stories”, straight: accurately fitted,clear. • 译文:一位观察家认为,基辛格的天才就在于 对九个人将九种不同的话,而且记得清清楚楚。
