Research Proposal班级10二专英语学号200908063199 姓名庄瑜ⅠTitle of my thesisThe Difference between Chinese and American Cultures Reflected in The Treatment由电影《刮痧》看中美文化差异ⅡLiterature reviewSince global is impossible to hold back. The communication between different cultures is getting more and more frequently. But the different values and the way deal with things of different cultures lead to culture conflicts in culture communication. And this paper is working on dig deep on the movie The Treatment directed by Zheng Xiaolong on culture difference and the way for main culture conflicts.Because the Inter-culture Communication has been used more and more widely and frequently, but on the other hand people has little knowledge of culture difference. People may learn how dose other country’s people live from different kind of media and news. But it’s not only incompletely but also with political view. So some colleges open some Inter-culture Communication courses to let students learn more about culture difference to adapt to the increasing Inter-culture Communication and gain more competition in their career. But to be honest, those courses can just lead the students to Inter-culture Communication not grapple the matter of Inter-culture Communication. But films have its adventures. It’s less infected by the policy, and it’s much easier for audiences to get the main idea. That’s why film becomes such an important role in learning culture difference. But in the daily life as far as I know a normal problem that student often ignores the teaching part but focus on the entertainment part. So I took Director Zheng Xiaolong’s movie The Treatment as breakthrough point and dig the details to show the matter. I hope this paper could help students in a way.In 1960s, it’s a time of Information Technology. Canadian specialist Marshall McLuhan came up with an idea of “Global Village”. T hat’s a giant leap in human communication history betweencountry and country. With more and more convenient mass Medias and transportations, people around the world get in touch with each other much more frequently in business, scholar, policy and some other areas. In America, Inter-culture Communication was first set as a course for diplomat training. American humanist Edward T. Hall is usually treated as the father of Inter-culture Communication analysis. His famous work The Silence Language is the foundation of modern Inter-culture Communication analysis. And in recent years, more and more books and magazines on Inter-culture Communication have been published. In China, Inter-culture Communication analysis started at about 1980s. It has been rapidly developed for the reason of opening and reforming. A big number of scholars published their papers on Inter-culture Communication in different ways. It can be concluded in value, thinking ways, relationship, education and language figures and some other ways. In this paper, I compare Chinese and American culture differences in the movie the Treatment. And I combine all the culture differences together to show the whole value system effect on two countries’ people. Because in my opinion, you can not find the reason just set yourself in the problem, it is just like when you are in a wood you can only see trees. So that’s the innovation of my paper from others. This paper could be divided into three parts, introduction, main body and conclusion. In the introduction part it introduces the main culture differences in the movie, two different styles of law culture, family education, and the Chinese traditional culture which is stand by Chinese medicine, “face”, take a look on American value through “American Dream ”. And in the main body it will tell the details of all the key points above and through the vivid examples to make the deep impression. And the last part it will come to the conclusion and reach the way to solve the problem caused by culture conflicts.ⅢKey pointsIt is quiet different between Chinese and American law culture. Chinese law culture is not so strict to process. It pays more attention on the matter of cases. In Chinese law culture relatives wouldn’t accuse each other until them can’t deal with it by themselves. The reason of this phenomenon is because China is a country on a family. China is not only consists of family in structure but also in blood. And Chinese law culture pays more attention on the collective rights but not the individual rights. Another reason is China is a communism country. It is obvious that the long history of feudal and the thousands years of Confu cian’s govern, the conception of country is a much bigger family is deeply rooted in Chinese people’s heart. But American law culture is almoston the opposite side. American law culture is in strict accordance with process. And you could win a case if only the evidences are on your advantage. And the most important difference between Chinese and American law culture is the law system. American law system is much more independent than Chinese. It’s easy for us to understand that. America is a young country with very short history. So it doesn’t have to face the problem which is left by history. And the consist of population is a great variety of races. That is the final reason why America can put those laws which is the symbol of democracy into practice without paying a lot of energy to deal with interest group. The duty of family education in China is to teach the children to be a person in Chinese value. And the Chinese value contains propriety, righteousness, integrity and honor. And in Chinese family education, children should always listen to their parents to show their fealty to their parents. But in American family education parents respect children’s choices. And they are devoted to develop children’s independence and creativity. But in Chinese family education, parents want their children have a bright future. So they pay more attention on the intelligence train. Parents help children to do everything except study. It makes their children more dependent than American children normally. In every American family, children are asked to do an amount of housework as a duty of a member of family. Children have the same place in family just like their parents and parents should also respect children’s choices. There is no good or bad way of each other because both of them brought up a lot of qualified people. Different kind of educations suit different countries. It’s may become better when we combine both different kind of educations but we need to experiment to be well prepared.Chinese traditional culture is not accepted that much in American society. In American society, they believe in science. But Chinese traditional culture sometimes can not been validated by science. Taking Chinese medicine for example, Chinese medicine is based on a belief of “ying”and “yang”. And Chinese medicine believes that human body is a mini universe. We must keep the balance to keep healthy. Different part of our body is connected by “jing” and “mai”. In Chinese medicine “qi” stands for the energy of our body and blood often show the statement of inner world of our body. Chinese medicine takes kinds of ways to work on points on human body to influence the “qi” and blood. And it finally keeps the inner balance. But modern medicine works on the lapse human parts or organs. Modern medicine usually uses high technology and experiments as their most important tools. They never extend a treatment until they know well of the theory of it.The “face” in Chinese society is the inflection of whole family. One person gain “face” and then his family or group would gain “face”. And his family and group will also lose face at the same time he loses face. In China, the more power you have, the more faces you own. The amount of face inflects the state of society you are. And Chinese show their respect in the language, behavior to those who play an important role in the society and who are old than themselves. American respects the personal working. People win his face by himself. They are much individual than Chinese. The biggest difference between Chinese face and American face is group honor and personal honor. And Americans do not like to talk about something too personal or something about privacy. On the contrary, Chinese people not only talk about weather, education and traffic but also talk about the income, age and family. But what a surprise, Chinese people are very shy to talk about outlook especially women’s. And Chinese believe that never don’t talk too much. Because it may makes the speaker embraced and impolite. On the contrary, Americans think it is impolite to be silent because it seems that the speaker’s speech is not so good or the speech is boring.Different value systems are hiding in Chinese and American body. American dream vivid shows Americans believe one can success by hard working. Everyone can change his society statement and makes life better and finally makes his dream come true. Americans admire individual heroes just like recent time’s super star—Jeremy Lin. They were not born with gold and outstanding talent but achieve a amazing achievement. Equality is the most important in American society. Every American believes a motto “God helps those who help themselves”. Equality leads to legalization. And on the other way round the legalization protects American civilizations’ equality. The center of American value system can concluded as individualism. On the contrary, the center of Chinese value system can concluded as collectivism. It fully supports that China was a communism society. The ancient history also left a great affection on the center value system. China is a country on the structure of millions families. Consolidate is not only on the form but also in the mind. China has a famous motto “Cultivate individual moral characters, run the family in unison, manage the nation in order, and peace will prevail throughout the universe”. Chinese also have a lot of rules to follow. “San Gang wu chang” reflect the class of China society. From the value system, we could come to a decision that all the culture differences are connected to another or even more.ⅣOutlineIntroduction1 The Sentiments and Culture Background of The Treatment2 Different Values Showed in the Movie and the Conclusion2.1 Chinese Value Showed in the Movie2.2 American Value Showed in the Movie3 Different Law Cultures Showed in the Movie and the Conclusion3.1 Chinese Law Culture Showed in the Movie and Analysis3.2 American Law Culture Showed in the Movie and Analysis4 Different Face Showed in the Movie and the Conclusion4.1 High Context Chinese Face Culture Showed in the Movie4.2 Low Context American Face Culture Showed in the Movie5 Different Education Showed in the Movie and the Conclusion5.1 Chinese Education Showed in the Movie5.2 American Education Showed in the MovieConclusionⅤBibliographyHall, Edward Twitchell.
