History
1956 - The name of the institution becomes the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation to reflect its broader focus.
1959 – The institute recruits noted biochemist A. Baird Hastings from Harvard University, whose laboratory conducts basic science. 1961 - Pioneering immunologist Frank Dixon and four of his colleagues (William Weigle, Joseph Feldman, Charles Cochrane, and Jacinto Vazquez) arrive from the University of Pittsburgh on July 1, establishing a Division of Experimental Pathology. 1962 –Biochemist Frank Huennekens arrives from the University of Washington Medical School to head the Biochemistry Division. Three years later, microbiologist John Spizizen arrives from the University of Minnesota to establish a Division of Microbiology.

1924 Inspired in part by the discovery of insulin, philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps founds the Scripps Metabolic Clinic on December 11, 1924, The clinic is initially part of Scripps Memorial Hospital.

In addition to the training of hundreds of postdoctoral fellows, TSRI offers a distinguished graduate program in the biological and chemical sciences as well as outreach programs for high school and middle school students, teachers, and undergraduates. TSRI provides opportunities for younger students and their teachers to learn more about science and scientific careers. From internships to workshops, outreach activities aim to generate excitement about the power and potential of the biomedical sciences.
1932 When Ellen Browning Scripps passes away at the age of 95, she leaves $300,000 (or the equivalent of more than $4 million in today’s dollars) in her will to the Metabolic Clinic “preferably for research.”

What sets chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) apart is the extraordinary level of collaboration between chemists and biologists. Rather than isolating faculty members and laboratories into separate disciplines, cooperation is encouraged and embraced, and biologists and chemists regularly work together on important research projects. Faculty members maintain broad research programs in areas as diverse as biological and chemical catalysis, synthesis of natural products, combinatorial chemistry, molecular design, chemical evolution, materials science, and chemical biology.

Education Programs
The graduate program at TSRI started in 1989 as the Macromolecular and Cellular Structure and Chemistry (MCSC) Program. A program in Chemistry followed three years after the establishment of the MCSC Program. In 2002, TSRI named its graduate program the Kellogg School of Science and Technology in honor of philanthropists Janet R. Kellogg and W. Keith Kellogg II. In 2005 TSRI's graduate program expanded to encompass the Jupiter, Florida campus. In addition to its Ph.D. programs, TSRI offers a Master’s Degree in the discipline of Clinical and Translational Investigation (MCTI) for physician-scientists.
