IV. Give brief answers to the following questions. (10%, 10 points, 5 points
each)
1. Briefly describe the differences among task, exercises, and exercise-tasks. Please give at
least one example for each type of activity.
When students are carrying out a task, they are focusing on the complete act of
communication. When students are carrying out an exercise, they are focusing their attention
on individual aspects of language such as vocabulary, grammar or individual skills.
Exercise-tasks comes halfway between tasks and exercises, this kind of activity consists of
contextualized practice of language items. (1 point for each explanation)

2. Briefly describe Hedge’s five main components of communicative competence.
Hedge discusses five main components of communicative competence, namely, linguistic
competence, pragmatic competence, discourse competence, strategic competence, and
fluency.
Linguistic competence ‘is concerned with knowledge of the language itself, its form and
meaning.
Pragmatic competence is concerned with the appropriate use the language in social context.
Discourse competence refers to one’s ability to create coherent written text or conversation
and the ability to understand them.
Strategic competence refers to strategies one employs when there is communication
breakdown due to lack of resources.
Fluency means one’s ability to ‘link units of speech together with facility and without strain
or inappropriate slowness or undue hesitation’.
