Many bridges were built on the river, so the name of the city came—Cambridge. It was a combination of transliteration and free translation. It means bridges of Cam River. By the way, the bridge of Cambridge, is one of the world's oldest bridges.➢The locationThe city of Cambridge is a university town and the administrative centre of the county of Cambridgeshire. It lies in East Anglia about 50 miles (80 km) north-by-east of London. Cambridge is also at the heart of the high-technology centre known as Silicon Fen – a play on Silicon Valley(硅谷) and the fens surrounding the city. This is a map of Cambridge and some other cities near it. The City of Cambridge is one of five districts within the county of Cambridgeshire.The Liberal Democrats have controlled the city council since 2000.➢SportsCambridge played a unique role in the invention of modern football: the game's first set of rules were drawn up by members of the University in 1848. The Cambridge Rules were first played on Parker's Piece and had a "defining influence on the 1863 Football Association rules. As for water sports, the most famous was punting, and we will talk about it later.➢The University of CambridgeThe University of Cambridge was founded in 1209. Today, it has 800’s history. So it is one of the world’s oldest universities and leading academic centers, and it is a self-governed community of scholars.➢MissionThe mission of the University of Cambridge is to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence.➢Core valuesThe University's core values are as follows: freedom of thought and expression; freedom from discrimination➢Affiliates of University of Cambridge have won more Nobel Prizes than those of any other institution.88 affiliates of the University of Cambridge have won the Nobel Prize since 1904;Affiliates have won in every category, with 29 Nobel prizes in Physics, 25 in Medicine, 21 in Chemistry, nine in Economics, two in Literature and two in Peace.➢The most famous college------king’s collegeKing‘s College was founded in 1441 by Henry VI (1421-71) and it is the most famous one among the 31 colleges in theUniversity of Cambridge. King’s has an outstanding academic record and is also world-famous for its Chapel and choir(唱诗班). The Christmas Eve service from King's (A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols) is broadcast to millions around the world.➢Mathematic bridgeIt is said that the bridge was built by Newton without a screw, but then a curious student took the bridge apart. As a result, he couldn’t restore it. So the only thing he could do was to create a screw bridge.➢punting?A punt is a narrow flat-bottomed boat that somewhat resembles a Venetian gondola(威尼斯小艇)with the curve removed. Punts generally seat up to four adults while a fifth person stands at the rear and propels the boat with a long pole. Punting along the River Cam is one of the traditional delights of visiting Cambridge, and something that should be tried - at least once - by everyone!Poling along the river looks effortless and easy; a relaxing way to enjoy a quiet summer afternoon. However, steering(驾驶)a punt is not as easy as it looks. For one thing, the pole can get stuck in the mud of the river bottom, and steering from the rear of a punt takes skill and dexterity(熟练). But don't worry,it doesn't take long to get the hang of things, and it really is a great deal of fun!➢Cambridge Arts TheatreCambridge Arts Theatre is a 666-seat theatre in central Cambridge. The theatre presents a varied mix of drama, dance, opera and pantomime(哑剧). It attracts some of the highest-quality touring productions in the country, as well as many shows direct from, or prior to, seasons in the West End(伦敦西区). Its annual Christmas pantomime is an established tradition in the city.➢Anglia Ruskin UniversityAnglia Ruskin University has its origins in the Cambridge School of Art opened in 1858 .It became a (专业技术学校)in 1991, using the name Anglia Polytechnic, and was then awarded university status in 1992. Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge Campus is home to one of only 5 (视力检定,验光法)schools in England (with there being only 8 in the whole of the UK) having its own Optometry Clinic offering free and a full range of optometric services to members of the public throughout the academic year. It is one of the largest providers of face-to-face part-time training in the country.。
