New Year's Day
New Year's Day is an international festival. It is the day when the earth has circled the sun for one round and is beginning another circling. It represents a new beginning when people send off the old days and welcome the new ones.
Valentine’s day
February 14 is Valentine's Day.It is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today,with the giving of candy, flowers, or other gifts between couples in love.Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages.
Halloween
Halloween was called Samhain(夏末节) by the Irish. Time: October 31 through to November 1.
During this period. To celebrate the festival, the Irish would dress up in bizarre(奇异的) costumes and parade through their villages,causing destruction and saying “Trick-or-Treat”, in-groups scare off any recently departed souls who might be prowling for bodies to inhabit . Irish immigrants brought several customs with them, including one of the symbols most commonly associated with Halloween -- the "Jack O'Lantern(南瓜灯)".
Although it wasn't celebrated in the U.K. until 1907, there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. Later, in the 1600' in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday."
Labor Day
Labor's Day is on May 1st. The Labor's Day is workers' holiday and workers can enjoy themselves to their heart's content. Many people choose to travel. And some others will go to the cinema. Some will go to parks. And others will stay at home.
Mother’s Day
In the UK. Mothers' Day is a holiday celebrated on second Sunday in May. First observance in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907, it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe (朱 莉娅·沃德·豪)in 1872 and by Anna Jarvis(安娜. 贾维斯) in 1907.
In the 16 th century, people celebrated New Year’s Day from March 25 to April 1. In the mid—1560s King Charles IX changed it from March 25 to January 1. But some people still celebrated in on April 1, so others called them April Fools. In England, people play jokes only in the morning. You are a “noodle” if someone fools you.
