它是城市快速发展和高等教育发展的产物，其英文一般称为“University Town”或“College Town”。
从世界范围来看，大学城具有非常悠久的历史，它的起源可以追溯到西方近代意义上大学的产生。
在我国则是近十年来的新兴产物，是我国基于特定区域，形成具有一定规模且彼此之间紧密联系，与所在城市相互依托、互动发展的高校集合体和高校单元集合体。
本文一共分为五个章节。
第一章，对大学城的发展背景和研究目的意义进行说明，概括了本文主要研究的内容和方向及方法，提出文章写作思路和框架。
第二章，综合论述了历史上和近期及现代大学国内外发展的相关理论和文献资料，阐述对大学城概念的各种解释和大学城发展模式的概念、分类方法，提出本人的观点，并对国内外文献资料进行分阶段整理。
第三章，例举了国内外几个具有代表性的大学城案例，并详细分析了我国大学城的发展历程和所呈现出来的发展特征，阐述大学城在发展过程中所存在的主要问题。
第四章，对大学城发展的模式进行了研究分析，提出现今大学城发展几种模式，包括因与城市互动而产生的关系所引起的发展模式，和大学城内部发展模式。
第五章，探讨了大学城的形成发展原因及影响因素，并对大学城的发展提出对策建议和意见，认为大学城发展应注重与城市空间的关系和内部规划、建设、管理上的系统构建等等。
第六章为文章的结论部分，对整篇文章进行了简单的概括性总结。
其中第三、四、五章为文章的重点部分，对大学城的发展模式进行了详尽的分析论述。

The place around the university and the university itself come into being a some size independent area which is primarily engaged in teaching and studying. In the area people can do work, study, and some other activities. University Town is the product of city and advanced education development fast. From the scope of the world, University Town is rich in history. It can be traced from the appearance of the western university in modern time. In our country University Town is a new object from about 10 years. It is college collections or college unit collections which has a some size and the colleges connect compactly each other, interact with the city where they are.This paper has 5 chapters. The 1st chapter introduces the study background and purpose of university town`s development, summarizes the main study direction and methods, puts forward the writing line and framework. The 2nd chapter discusses the college development`s related theories and documents generally, formulates all kinds of explanation with the concept of university town and development mode and classifications, brings forward my standpoint, reorganizes domestic or foreign documents according to period of time. The 3rd chapter gives a few typical examples, analyses domestic university town`s development history and features in detail, represents the problems during developing, studies development patterns. The 4th chapter raises some kinds of developments nowadays including the patterns of interactivity with city and intern. The 5th chapter talks over some reasons about its formation and development, gives some countermeasures and advices, considers thatit should be taken into account about the relationship to city, internal planning, construction and management. The 6th chapter is the end of this paper, sums up the conclusion simply.
