Globalization is a complicated issue, at once both a topic of scholarly discussion and of policy debate; of an already-past history and of still-evolving future at stake. If we are to pursue a broader understanding of ‘globalization’ or ‘early globalization’ through the historical process of long-term change from the sixteenth century on, we should not directly apply simplistic notions of ‘Westernization’ or ‘modernization’. cultures and national populations. At the same time, we must investigate how populations of different regions at that time responded to the concrete historical process, beginning from the sixteenth century, of an increased flow of goods and people prompted by domestic and foreign trade; and by the accelerating changes to the economic and political system that followed in its wake. Seriously engaging with the historical development of different regions on their own terms and with their ‘intersubjective’ interactions will bring a deeper and more nuanced understanding of globalization both as an important historical phenomenon and as a contemporary and future development. Employing the evolution of Ming-Qing society as our primary platform for observation and as our intermediary in this larger dialogue, this course hopes to further our critical understanding of the complex and ongoing historical phenomenon of globalization.
