Tall Building
What is a tall building? What is a skyscraper? What is the difference between them?
World Building

曼哈顿人寿保险公司大楼
Wishing to create an architectural symbol to outshine its rivals, in 1892 the Manhattan Life Insurance Company held a competition for its new headquarters at 64-66 Broadway across from Trinity Church, selecting architects Kimball and Thompson.
Columns embedded in the exterior walls carried the floor loads, transferring lateral forces between the frame and the masonry.
The facade was red sandstone, brick and terra-cotta, with red and gray granite at the arched entryway.

The structural system of the World Building was a hybrid "cage" frame.
Steel framing was used to support the interior structure, but the exterior masonry walls contributed lateral stability and some vertical support.

Architect and engineer George B. Post, designer of the World Building, stacked its twenty-six stories with repeating ionic orders, and terminated the composition of horizontals with a classical cornice rather than a dome or flagstaff.
The Masonic Temple

The ornate limestone facade was cantilevered from the floor girders with the main structural members placed within the pier faces protected from heat and moisture.
Arguably the birthplace of the skyscraper, Chicago has held the title of tallest building twice in skyscraper history.
In 1892, the Masonic Temple rose twenty-two stories at the corner of Randolph and State Streets.
