Dual Mass Flywheel Calming the drive train 01/min t Transmission Engine 01/min t Transmission Engine The LuK Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) hasbeen used by car manufacturers asoriginal equipment for decades. Why? Because excellent noise andvibration damping is extremely im-portant in order to satisfy theincreasing demands for drivingcomfort. A clutch system thereforemust not only ensure safe coupling anddecoupling of engine and transmission, but also absorb vibrations to preventgearbox rattle and body boom.Less vibration in the drive train – moremomentum in your businessThe DMF provides technical benefitsmanufacturers cannot ignore! As a sup-plementary part of the clutch, the DMFis positioned between the engine andthe transmission to neutralize vibrationand relieve the strain on the crankshaft. Thus the DMF meets the ever greaterdemands for smooth running, drivingcomfort and fuel efficiency.Torsional vibration with conventional flywheel Torsional vibration with DMF The DMF, like the clutch itself, is subject to normal wear and tear. It is therefore important to test and replace the DMF,if necessary. In summary:•fulfills the increased demand for driving comfort •reduces noise and fuel consumption •must also be checked during a clutch repair and replaced if necessary•cannot be retrofittedORIGINAL EQUIPMENT20002002200420062008201001020304050607080The number of new vehicles fitted with a LuKDual Mass Flywheel continues to increase.million passenger cars... with a thriving future!Today, every second passenger car or light commercial vehiclewhich rolls off the assembly line is equipped with a DMF – andthat share is still increasing! The trend towards more enginetorque and more gear speeds ensures excellent prospectsfor the DMF. Because the DMF offers just what the marketneeds: more driving comfort and less fuel consumption. Anddue to the increasing market share in the OE sector, the DMF’sbusiness potential in the aftermarket is also growing. In short:• a success story for more than 20 years• expanding market share in original equipment(every second car in Europe)A success story …Since its launch in 1984, the LuK Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)has been fitted as original equipment in more and more carmodels. And that for a very good reason – where a conven-tional single-mass clutch and rigid flywheel reach their limits, the DMF, with its decoupled dual masses and a torsion angle of up to 180°, can absorb much more oscillating energy. The characteristics of each DMF are precisely designed for its corresponding application. Springs, dampers and masses must be perfectly harmonised with the vehicle’s drive train components.OE quality in its full varietyThe DMF is on the way to becomingan OE standard in passenger cars andlight commercial vehicles – with almostevery leading vehicle manufacturer. Thelist of makes and models ranges from A asin Audi to V as in Volvo and speaks for itself. The following vehicle manufacturers trustin superior original equipment quality madeby LuK:Audi, Bertone, BMW, Chevrolet, Citroën, Fiat, Ford,Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lancia, LandRover/Range Rover, LDV, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, MG, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel,Peugeot, Porsche, Puch, Renault, Rover,Saab, Seat, Ssangyong, Suzuki, Toyota,Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Volvo. In order for you, the independent workshop, to benefit most from the DMF, LuK strives to make its handling as easy as possible. The following useful advice helps you to detect wear and tear and damage patterns on a DMF.Friction surface A:Scoring marks on the friction surface arecaused by the rivets of a worn out clutch.Torque can no longer be transferred andthe friction surface is subjected tocontinued wear.Friction surface B:Cracks in the friction surface occur as aresult of thermal overload, caused e.g. bya worn out clutch disk. The DMF’s oper-ational reliability is no longer maintained.Plain bearing:Radial bearing clearance of up to 0.17mmis within the limits of normal wear and tear.Caution: If clearance exceeds 0.17mm, in-creased tilting movement of the secondaryflywheel occurs.Identify , verify , act!The basic rule is: A DMF cannot be repaired, it must be replaced. Whether or not a DMF requires replacement can be determined by the following symptoms:DMF outer edges :Blue/purple discolouration at the outer edges,on the connecting bars where the DMF isbolted to the crankshaft, on the back sideas well as other visible damage indicatesthat very high thermal loads were applied.Starter ring gear:A heavily worn starter ring gear is causedby a defective starter, this can be accompa-nied by noise emission at engine start-up.Sensor ring:Bent sensor ring teeth indicate mechanicaldamage and are detrimental to the smoothrunning of the engine.Grease egress:Little grease egress is no reason for concern. If however more than 20g have leaked, theamount of grease left in the housing is nolonger sufficient to ensure effective lubri-cation of the DMF components.Europe relies on the DMF. Be ready!。
