History of Couplets
The couplets have a fairly long history. Before the Song Dynasty, the couplets were written on the peach wood charms and hung on the two sides of the gate. In the Song Dynasty, the couplets dissociated from the peach wood charms and were carved on the major column of the building, hence the name column couplets.
