Jude, the hero of the novel, lost his parents when he was only eleven. However, he is a diligent and gifted. He learnt Latin and Greek by himself between the tiring work as a baker and a mason. Although Jude longed for to attend the university at Christminster, his poor background and low social class disillusion him.
Sue, Jude’s cousin, was a girl yearning of freedom. She fell in love with Jude. However, their special relationship was forbidden by the Christianity at that time.
Jude and Sue could only struggle to support their poverty-stricken family by doing heaviest work. Nevertheless, their children died with all the hardship and misery of their young lives.
The story thoroughly exposed the darkness of the social system, and unreasonable criticism of the institution of marriage.
Reading Report on Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist, the hero of this novel, an orphan who was thrown into a world full of misery and crime. He was once cheated by an old instigator, and became a pickpocket. He happened to know that his half-brother wanted to kill him for the property.
He felt the fear and helplessness of life. Dramatically, the victims of theft were his father’s friend and his aunt. These kind people sympathize d with him and helped him to leave the den of thieves. Finally, he forsook heresy and returned to the truth.
Not all orphans are so lucky as he. Nevertheless, t he story makes us believe that kindness can make there one good man more and one bad man less in the world.。
