Fu Lei (傅雷, courtesy name Nu'an 怒安, pseudonym Nu'an 怒 庵, 1908–1966), was a famous translator and art critic. He was born near Shanghai and raised by his mother. He studied art and art theory in France from 1928–1932. Upon his return to China, he taught in Shanghai and worked as a journalist and art critic until he took up translating.
• Fu Lei is an outstanding translator, an artistic theoretician as well as a connoisseur of arts. He is one of the few modern writers who really master law of arts. His knowledge covers that of China and of foreign countries, of tradition and of modern times. Besides literature, he is excellent in painting and music, showing superb ability to appreciate them. His writing amounts to over one million words, which includes novels, prose, literary comments, prefaces, epilogues, reviews of his time, letters, and works on fine arts and music.
• Thus we know more about his rich and profound thoughts. • To Fu Lei, morality is of vital importance. The basic and most important requirement to any artist is that (s)he must be embodied with a high morality and integral personality. Real excellent works can be produced only by those artists and writers who have an integral personality. In Fu Lei"s opinion, an artist"s morality directly influences the quality of his artistic creation.
• From Fu Lei"s writing, we can easily find his novel opinions on critics" qualification, on how to understand literary works properly, and on the proper wayto make comments on them. All these build his unique ideas of criticism. To him, a true critic must be "a brilliant, sober, moral person with penetrating judgment". A true critic should act like this: he dares to call a spade a spade; he can accept and tolerate other kinds of arts with his genu Lei for unlimited translation seriously, relentlessly progressive, open mind. See his translation of the biography as long as five, one is worth 1. "Charlotte rumor" is the first one. "Beethoven" Although the first pen to paper, it is satisfactory translation of the decade, beginning Speaks Louder and translation is obviously different. He often wrote and we pay attention to translation issues, specific issues are clearly recorded in red text. Unfortunately, the many letters have been destroyed. Fu Lei never complacent - to work seriously on himself satisfied. He never thinks to his proposal for Translation. Fu Lei regretful's hate is not a lot of time reading a book, it was love that he is proud that they saw him humbly side.
