• In 1944, Miss Hu Xianjin published an essay named “On the Concept of Chinese Face”. For the first time, she made an academic research on the concept of face. Her research suggested a definition of face, and distinguished “mian” from “lian” in Chinese culture.

• Zhou Meiling considers that face is not only a psychological construction, but also a social construction. It refers to public image and social dignity claimed by individuals and recognized by others. (1997:205-254)

• Ho agreed with Hu Xianjin’s explanations about face, because different criteria for the classification of face reflect different requirements imposed on the different social communities. But he also proposed that "the meaning of the “lian” or “mian” may conveys based on the conversation, and sometimes the meaning of the word are interchangeable, not definitely different."(1994:269—286 )
