Classroom Debate Guidelines 英语课堂辩论

Objective:
Students will be placed in debate teams. Each group will present a topic and a side to defend. Using what you have learned during the semester and with additional research you will present your side of the topic. All group members will split the responsibilities.
Team Responsibilities:
1)Prepare and research your debate topic.
2)Clearly state your point.
3)Prepare a good and ‘strong’ opening statement.
4)Write key points on index cards.
5)Have evidence and relevant examples.
6)Speak to your audience.
7)Be prepared to counter your opponent’s points.
8)Team members will alternate speeches.
9)During rebuttals teams are expected to extend and apply arguments that have already been
made, rather than make new arguments.
10)‘Recycle’ during closing speech. Do not make new points!
Rules:
No interrupting your peers!
Stay calm and speak in a clear voice.
No personal attacks! Remem ber that debaters don’t choose their sides.
Non-participants
1.Be respectful of your peers.
2.Take notes on each debate.
3.Identify the pros and cons.
4.Be prepared to explain which side has proved its point and why.
FORMAT
There are three debaters per side. Each debater gives one speech. This is the order of the speeches:
First proposition constructive – 6 minutes
This speaker makes a case for the motion for debate, providing a proof of the topic with three or four major points.
First opposition constructive – 6 minutes
This speaker makes several arguments against the proposition team’s case and refutes the proposition’s major points.
Second proposition constructive – 6 minutes
This speaker should rebuild and extend upon the proposition’s case. This means that thi s speaker must defend and amplify the original proposition points and refute the opposition’s major arguments.
Second opposition constructive – 6 minutes
This speaker amplifies the opposition arguments against the case, providing new information about why the opposition team should win the debate. This speaker should answer the proposition’s answers to the opposition team’s original arguments. This speaker may split summarization of the debate with the opposition rebuttalist.
Opposition rebuttal – 5 minutes
This speaker must put the debate together and explain why, given one or more arguments in the debate, the opposition team should win the debate. This speaker accounts for or refutes the proposition’s major points.
Proposition rebuttal – 5 minutes
This spe aker should summarize the issues in the debate and explain why, even with the opposition’s arguments; the proposition teams should win the debate. This speaker accounts for all remaining major points of the opposition team.
Suggested debate topics:
1.Religion does more harm than good
2.The traditional university will be replaced by online learning
3.Housewives should be paid for their work
4.Animal testing should be banned
5.Terrorism should not be publicised。
