Challenges of Labour. London: Routledge, 1993.本學期所用參考書目世界現代史一、授課教材、方式、規則、考察辦法首先是教科書的問題，我不打算以強制方式指定哪一本，因為市面上至少有三本教科書，都相當優秀，內容也條理清晰、簡單易瞭。
這三本是王曾才教授著的《世界現代史》（台北：三民，1992，2冊）和《西洋現代史》（台北：正中，1986），以及李邁先教授著的《西洋現代史》（台北：三民，1995）。
你們可以任擇一本予以精讀，作為課堂的基本教材，也可以分組閱讀，再互相交換意見。
事實上，這門課的基本內容、史實敘述也都不脫這三本書的範疇。
另外還有幾本翻譯本，也不錯。
例如，最近相當暢銷的《極端年代》（由艾瑞克．霍布斯邦著，鄭明萱翻譯，台北麥田書局出版）。
這本書史觀深入，相當有見解，但是個人色彩也稍嫌濃厚一點。
而且，若是基本史實發展、人物認識不足的話，唸起來相當辛苦，也容易被誤導。
所以建議你們在讀完上述的基本教材後，再詳讀這本書。
我個人則是相當欣賞這本書，也頗有同感。
此外，五南書局也出了幾本翻譯作品，有空時也可以拿來看看。
例如，劉京建譯的《西洋現代史》（原作者為Robert Paxton），這也是美國大學較流行的一本教科書。
