Expecting a journey of only several meters, Bob was wearing just long johns (衬裤), a shirt and slippers when he went outside, although the temperature was around -4℃.After the accident, he was unable to move in the snow. Fortunately, Kelsey came to his assistance."I was shouting for help, but my nearest neighbor is about 400 meters away, and it was 10:30 pm, Bob explained." But my Kelsey came. By the next morning, my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking."Kelsey's companion kept him warm by lying on top of him. She licked his face and hands to keep him awake." Kelsey kept barking but never left my side," Bob recalled. "She kept me warm.I knew I couldn’t give up and that it was my choice to stay alive."Bob spent 20 hours in the freezing cold. When he finally lost consciousness, his dog kept barking. Finally, hearing the barking, Bob's neighbor discovered him at 6:30 pm on New Year’s Day and called the emergency services at once. When Bob arrived in hospital, his body temperature was below 21℃. However, doctors were surprised to find that he didn't have any frostbite (冻疮). They believed it was because of Kelsey's determination to keep him warm, Dr. Chaim Colen, the doctor who treated Bob, said, "Animals can help and his dog really saved him... CCWeighing too much can damage your health, and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world. Sleep might be one answer to the problem. A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds.Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weighing more, but scientists have had a tough time determining "which came first, the chicken or the egg," says Julie C. Lumeng of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In other words, it hasn’t been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. Both scenarios(可能出现的情况) seemed equally possible. To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and her colleagues interviewed the parents of 785 third graders from around the United States. The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year. Three years later, the parents answered the same questions. By sixth grade, 18 percent of kids involved in the study were obese. The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students’ race or gender. It also didn’t matter how strict their parents were, or whether they were boy s or girls. Obesity struck all of these groups equally. Instead, sleep seemed to be the key factor. Over the 3 years of the study, the children averaged a healthy 9.5 hours of sleep a night. Some kids, however, slept a lot more —or less — than others. For the sixth graders, every hour of sleep above the 9.5-hour average was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being obese. Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders. Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40 percent drop in obesity.8.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 imply?A.Scientists have found the exact causes of children’s obesity.B.There is always something difficult to understand through theory.C.The cause-effect relationship between weight and sleep isn’t clea r.D.A person’s weight has something to do with the amount of his sleep.9.What did the interview find out?A.9.5 hours of sleep a night is enough for children.B.The more a child sleeps, the healthier he will be.C.Six graders need much more sleep than third graders.D.One’s race or gender has nothing to do with his weight.10.How does the author develop the passage?A.By listing figures.B.By comparing different opinions.C.By providing examples.D.By conducting a survey.11.What is the suitable title for the passage?A.The benefits of enough sleep for childrenB.Sleeping less increases the risk of obesityC.Which comes first, little sleep or obesity?D.How many hours of sleep do children need?答案: 1.C 2.D 3.A 4.BDA British study showed that young men in the United Kingdom have grown by 10 centimeters since the turn of the 20th century. In the study, the average height of British men, who had an average age of 20, was about 168 centimeters at the turn of the century, whereas now they stand on average at about 178 cm. Theincrease is most likely related to improved nutrition and health services, said the researchers from the University of Essex in Colehester(科尔切斯特).In a number of other developed countries, people have been growing taller, too, reaching the world’s current greatest average height of 1.85 meters in the Netherlands. Interestingly, Americans were the tallest people in the world by World War II, measuring 1.77meters, but by the end of the 20th century, they fell behind, and the average U.S. Has stopped rising. And even in some of those countries where the average height has been rising, the increase has not been uniform. For instance, after years of communist rule, people from former East Germany are still catching up height-rise with former West Germans. And in some non-Western countries that have been bothered by war, disease and other serious problems, average height has decreased at one point in time or another. For instance, there was a decline in the average height among blacks in South Africa between the end of the 19th century and 1970. The decline was likely related to the effects of poor socio -economic conditions before and during apartheid (种族隔离).The generation- after- generation effects of something bad that happened to a mother gets carried on to her children and her grandchildren, and it takes about five generations to overcome just one generation of starvation, or epidemic illness, or something like that.( ) 12. Which is the best title for the passage?A. People have grown taller.B. The reason for height rise.C. How different are people?D. Who are the tallest people? ( ) 13. What probably caused Britis h men’s height increase according to the study?A. Their birthplace.B. Their young age.C. More rest time.D. Better nutrition( ) 14.
