On Education in China 论中国教育

On Education in ChinaEducation has always been a significant issue for countries all over the world. Since it can stimulate the science and technology of a nation, and thus does great contribution to the economy, leading to the more and more attention given by the governments in recent days. To lay emphasis on is one thing, but to achieve is another. Many countries fail to use proper methods or measures to improve native education, and it is believed that China is one of the negative examples. Although China has appealed for quality education, aimed to promote students’ overall development, it is facing the crisis of turning students into question-answering machines. It is apparent that creativity is the most needed part of education in China.Education is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research (online dictionary) .However, this traditional definition can no longer serve for the modern society. Modern education is not only the delivery system of knowledge, skills and information but the key to sparkle one’s thoughts and inspiration. And as for China, there is no doubt that the Ministry of Education follows this principle tightly and makes the students receive knowledge from text books without much creative exploration. As a result, the whole society is in great need of creativity produced by education.Creativity is the key to a well-developed and advanced society. As is mentioned above, education plays an important role in the society, which embodies the underlying value of creativity. Take the U.S.A as an example, as a highly-developed and powerful nation, America is famous for its creativity and vigor. From 1929 to 1941, the contributionof technology to the economy growth was 33.8%; and by the 80s, it had been over 80%. (Wang, Science Times July 14th, 2010) The Ivy League isn’t famous for nothing, and it actually is the cradle of the nation’s high-tech and innovative industry such as the world-known IT companies IBM, Microsoft, Apple and so on. These were bred by the creative education in the U.S.A., which is based on and adapted to reality. On the contrary, the under-developed areas or countries, for example, Africa and Southeast Asia are not able to pay enough attention to education, not to mention creativity, resulting in the slow and strenuous development of the nation. In the schools of those areas, the courses about natural science and technology appear too late and they seldom mention it in the adult education system. (Chang 56-57)Pushed by the stream of improving science and technology throughout the world, China also tries its best to promote education, but creative education is hardly found or emphasized in China. Every Chinese must remember the shocking scene of students sitting straight, listening to the teacher carefully and busy doing endless homework every day, and the situation gets more terrible for the graduating class. Everyone directly or indirectly involved in education, such as students, teachers and parents, clearly know that this amusing but common phenomenon in China is due to the school entrance exam and education system, making students go to school just to get admitted to a good high school or university, not for the knowledge. Things really go wrong for education in China, and it even brings about some social problems. For example, there are increasing Chinese students inclined to study abroad; from 1978 to 2012, there were altogether 2644700 students studying abroad, 90% of whom paid by themselves, and from 2007, the numberof students studying abroad has grown in a blowout type. (The Report of the Trend of Studying Abroad in China, </>) Students and parents consider it as a valuable chance to improve oneself and the road to success in the future, and the book Harvard Girl Liu Yiting, talking about the experience of a Chinese girl who got the admission notice from four universities in the Ivy League at the same time, is such a hit and a great model regarded by countless Chinese students. Getting up at 6:30 am, every student needs to keep studying at school until 10:30 pm, and yet most students continue to study at home till midnight. (Zhang 304) The excellent girl Liu Yiting is worth public appreciation, but it takes too much for a student to achieve this and such a Chinese-type study method can never help to promote the nation and society.China should really take measures to improve the creativity in education. According to the research carried out by professors, students and the media, the recent ratio of female students in university is increasing continuously. After specific analysis, some experts say this result is related to the exam-oriented education system of China, which emphasizes the knowledge reciting more than creativity and thinking, giving the female students superiority. (Li, China Education, October 17th, 2013) If China doesn’t stop the current education system, then maybe in the future the education will run out of balance between different genders and it will surely influence the job occupation area. For the time being, the most fundamental thing is to redefine the real meaning of education, and once people realize education is not just a delivery system of knowledge, skills and information but the key to spark one’s thoughts and inspiration, only then will they know how wrong they used to be to just focus on exams. (Definition of Education,<>) Furthermore, schools and parents should encourage students to develop daily skills and hobbies out of text books and do more interesting exploration and practice, which reminds them of the joy and the real meaning of learning and makes them creative self-learners.Taking all things above into consideration, education is a key part of modern social development. Once a nation does well in education, it can easily promote many aspects for its citizens. Owing to the current exam-oriented education system, China is in great need of creativity to support its development. Let’s focus on the true value of education and make our nation a more creative and innovative home.Bibliography①/education②Jing, Wang. “America: 5% of the world’s population creates 40% of the world’s hi-tech products” Science Times July 14th, 2010③Chuchun, Chang.
