AAn Unexpected StormThis is a story about an extreme storm in Moscow. It happened two and a half years ago. It was the first time in my life that I saw such a strong storm. For Moscow, it was very unusual, and nobody predicted this storm before it happened. It was a sunny day in July, and I was at home alone watching TV. The windows and the door to the balcony were wide open because the weather was so hot.Suddenly, I felt a strong wind from outside. I wanted to close the window and came near. I looked out of the window and saw a blac k sky and trees blowing over because of the strong wind. I tried to close the window, but the wind made me fall down. I was afraid that the glass might break.I stood up and tried to close the window again, but it was not possible because the wind was now stronger, and it was pushing the window open. I ran into the bathroom and took the mop to close the window. It worked. When I looked outside, the tree in front of my window was fiat on the ground, and there was strong thunder and lightning. I decided to pull out all the electrical plugs, which took about 10 seconds. A sportsman would have envied my speed. When I finished, I looked outside. It was terrible, and I understood how people are helpless compared to the power of nature.Suddenly, the wind stopped, and it began to hail (下冰雹). The ice was the size of grapes. After 10 minutes, everything stopped, and the sun shone as before. It was strange. A few minutes later, the phone began to ring every five minutes. It was my friends or relatives. We asked each other how it was and how we felt after the storm. Many trees died because of the storm. For a few days, the people helped clean parks and gardens. There are many different types of coffee and experts think that there are more flavors of coffee than there are of wine. Coffee contains caffeine, something that raises our awareness, keeps us from failing asleep or simply gives us a kick in the morning or after lunch.Food experts, however, are still undecided on how healthy coffee is. For a long time doctors have told people not to drink too much coffee, b ecause it may lead to heart problems, high blood pressure, and headaches.Scientists have now found out that it is the quality of coffee and the way it is made that hold the key to our health. Elderly people on the Greek island of Ikaria live longer than normal. Among other things, this is linked to the consumption of a strong coffee. Experts also point out that different roasts and types of coffee beans have different effects on our health. Milk and sugar change the different levels of caffeine in a cup of coffee.A new study by a Harvard research group says that there is no link between coffee and health problems. Drinking several cups of strong coffee a day is not connected with early death or other heart diseases.Coffee has many advantag es, as the new study suggests. While alcohol makes people sleepy and slow moving, coffee gives them energy. Getting together for a cup of coffeeis also a form of socializing and has a positive effect on relationships.Although a lot still needs to be uncovered about coffee, it seems to reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes (糖尿病). Reports show that people who drink coffee may develop Parkinson’s disease later in life, or maybe not at all. Doctors think that coffee may have a posit ive effect on our brain.24. Coffee may not be connected with health problems.27. Which can be the best title of this passage?A. Coffee and EnergyB. Coffee and WineC. Coffee and HealthD. Coffee and BrainCComparing ourselves with others isn’t a recent phenomenon—it’s part of our culture. As soon as we’re able to form our own thoughts and opinions, we start comparing. Who’s taller?Who’s better at sports? Who has more friends?Unlike other childish habits, the urge to measure up(攀比) doesn’t ever really go away. In fact, it only increases when we become teens. “At a younger age, I found myself wanting to be cool and wondering why I wasn’t that cool,” said a junior student Michael Torres. “So I began doing what they did in order to fit in with my own friends.”We are flooded with the message that we should compare ourselves with others.Magazines, advertisements, stores—it becomes all about what other people have or what they’ve achieved. Social media adds another layer to the problem. Facebook, Twitter and QQ offer a constant stream of updates about the people around us. She got accepted to Harvard? He bought the brand new Nikes? They’re da ting?“If I go on Facebook or Twitter and read about how wonderful everyone else is, I’m not feeling good about myself. It’s going to make me feel worse,” said Mike Robbins, a senior student. “I try not to let things like that affect me, but in the modern world of technology it’s hard not to take notice of what others are doing, and sometimes you want to be just like them.”Before you get caught up in the comparison game, keep in mind one very important detail: When it comes to social media, we often present only the things we want people to see—the good fortunes, happy moments, delicious desserts and best smiles. The deeper question is: Are people really posting things on social media that are true or are they simply doing it to present something to other people? It’s what we do in our culture: “Look how great I am,” “Look how smart I am,” “Look how happy I am,” and sometimes that’s true, but in a lot of cases, it’s not. While comparing ourselves to others can inspire us to get ahead and work harder, it can also drive us crazy. Next time you find yourself wondering if you measure up, remember this: What we have is not a measure of who we are. We already have worth as an individual when we’re born. Everything else is what people think of us.28. When do we start to compare ourselves with others?A. When we go to junior schools.B. When we were born into the world.C. When we have Facebook or Tweeter.D. When we have thoughts and opinions.29. According to the author, why would people like to post wonderful things on social media?A. To show off their lives.B. To get advice from readers.C. To share happiness with others.D. To communicate useful information.30. The author presents the phenomenon of the comparison by _________.A. listing a lot of figuresB. giving facts and examplesC. providing scientific findingsD. comparing famous persons’ opinions31. From the passage, we learn that the author _________ comparison with others.A. supportsB. ignoresC. opposesD. respectsD“Are the volcanoes in Yellowstone National Park going to erupt anytime soon? Will the world end if it does?” People across the world have been keeping a close watch on the famous national park.Yellowstone National Park assured (保证) guests and the public on Thursday that a super-volcano under the park was not expected to erupt anytime soon, despite a video that claimed bison (野牛) had been seen fleeing to avoid such a disaster.Yellowstone officials, who received dozens of calls and emails since the video went online this week following an earthquake in the park, said the video actually shows bison rushing down a paved road that leads deeper into the park.“It was a spring-like day and they were crazy. Contrary to online rep orts, it’s a natural happening and not the end of the world,” park spokeswoman Ms. Green said.Assurances by Yellowstone officials and government geologists that the ancient super-volcano beneath the park is not due to explode have actually done little to reduce fears.Comments from a self-described survivor suggest the wildlife fleeing may be tied to “a coming eruption here at Yellowstone”.The 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck early Sunday near the Norris Geyser Basin in the northwest of Yellowstone, which extends 3, 472 square miles of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, caused no injuries or damages and did not make any noticeable changes to the landscape, geologists said.Though mild by seismic (地震的) standards, it was the largest to shake Yellowstone since a 4.8 quake in February 1980. “But neither the quake, the largest among hundreds that have struck the area in the last seven months, nor the uplift suggests an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of years. The chance of that happening in our lifetime is very small.” said Mr. Smith, associate director at the U. S. Geological Survey’s Volcano Science Center. He said the area of uplift that scientists had been tracking since August was rising at a rate of between 10 centimeters and 15 centimeters a year. Geologists who tracked uplift in the same area from 1996 to 2003 also saw rising seismic activity, he said.32. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Bison.B. Officials.C. Geologists.D. Guests.33. We can learn from the passage that _________.A. there have been only 2 earthquakes since 1980B. there’s only one survivor in the Sunday earthquakeC. there’re still fears after hearing the official assurancesD. there’s an online report that bison fleeing is a natural happening34. What’s Mr. Smith’s prediction about the volcanic eruption in Y ellowstone National Park?A. It will never happen.B. It may happen anytime.C. It won’t h appen in our lifetimeD.
