Today, we send millions of Christmas cards every year. But the first 17 Christmas card, as we understand the term today, was 18 in London, England in 1840. It went on sale in 1843. The designer was John Callcott Horsley, a well-known British painter and 19 of the Royal Academy. He designed the card at the 20 of his friend Sir Henry Cole, who was the first director of the Victoria && Albert Museum. Horsley produced1,000 cards and 21 them for sale at one shilling each. They were printed 22 stiff card and colored by hand, with the 23 : “A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year To You”. The card shows 24 pictures: in the centre, a family party; to one side the hungry receiving food; to the other side the poor being clothed. Puritans (清教徒) immediately made a(n) 25 on the card, since it showed people drinking in the family party. 26 with most people the idea was a great 27 and the Christmas card quickly became very popular.Christmas cards were not the 28 greeting cards. Since 1796, with improvements in printing, merchants had been sending cards to their 29 offering “best wishes”for the new year. In many countries, Christmas cards gradually became even more 30 than New Year’s cards. As Christmas is the 31 of Jesus Christ, cards often show scenes of His nativity (诞生). Others show images 32 Christmas such as 33 scenes of snow-laden pines, Father Christmas (Santa Claus), stars, candles or holly. The 34 greeting written on a Christmas card is “Merry Christmas”, but many 35 greetings are also used, such as “Happy Xmas”or “Happy Noel”.16. A. copied B. produced C. took D. delivered17.
