Simple Present and Present Continuous Tenses
When writing a descriptive essay, the writer most often uses the simple present or present continuous tenses.
• The goal of narration is to tell a story or to describe the elements of an event.
Description

Topic Sentences
• A topic sentence contains the main idea upon which a paragraph is developed. Often it appears at (or near) the beginning of a paragraph, introducing the main idea and suggesting the direction that the paragraph will take. What follows a topic sentence are a number of supporting sentences that develop the main idea with specific details.
The simple present tense is used to discuss permanent situations and the frequency of events.
