（一） 简单句的翻译
翻译简单句有时可亦步亦趋，有时则需在引申词义、转换词类 和调整词序、句序上下功夫，例如： （1） I bought the car.我买了这部车。（转换成汉语简单句） （2） But this naval competition strained the Liberal Government's principles as well as their budgets.但是这种海军 竞赛使自由党政府的原则无法自圆其说，也使其预算捉襟见肘。 （转换成汉语联合复句的并列句） （3） Law enforcement cannot responsibly stand aloof.司法 部门如果对此不闻不问，那就是没有尽到责任。（转换成汉语偏 正复句的假设句）
当然，英语的状语还可置于句首和句中。汉语句中 的状语也是这样，但因具体情况差异很大，所以英 语的状语翻译成汉语时得视汉语的表述而定。试比 较： With the help of other students , he has made much progress in his English studies .(状语置于句 首)在其他同学的帮助下，他的英语学习进步很快。 Now Japan has largely fulfilled its economic needs .(状语置于句中)现在，日本在很大程度上实 现了其经济发展的需要。
例如： His idea is that we clean the floor first.他的意见是我 们先清扫地板。（英语中that 引导的是一个表语从 句，而汉语中"我们先清扫地板"只是一个主谓结构（ 词组）作宾语。） 其次，英汉两种语言在句序上也有一定的差异， 如英语简单句的句序一般是"主语+谓语+宾语+状语" ，而汉语单句的则一般是"主语+状语+谓语+宾语"， 例如： I woke up in the middle of night.我在半夜里醒了 。
（2）根据语境确立译法 3. The story dated back to one night in March， 1993，when Mr. and Mrs. Shoemakers went to an observatory near San Diego，California to observe heavenly bodies till dawn. 故事发生在1993年3月的一个夜晚。苏梅克夫妇 到加利福尼亚圣迭戈附近的一座天文台去观测天体， 直到黎明。
(三) 、状语从句的翻译
A、时间状语从句
（1）译成相应的表示时间的状语 1. When they analyzed these rocks，they found “shocked” quartz grains—slivers with a particular arrangement of micro cracks believed to represent the relic left by an extraterrestrial impact. 在分析这些岩芯时，他们发现“冲击”石英颗粒———带 有特殊排列的微裂缝的薄片，科学家认为他们是外层空间来的 物体与地球碰撞留下来的遗迹。 2. As land developed，rain water and rivers dissolved salts and other substances from rocks and carried them to the oceans，making the ocean salty. 在陆地形成时，雨水和河水溶解了岩石中的盐和其他物质 并把它们带入海洋，使海水变咸。
例如： （1） Whether an object will sink or float depends on its density.物体在水中的沉浮取决于物体的比重。（ 名词分句——转换为汉语单句,名词分句成主语） （2） I owe it to you that I didn't die.我没死，全靠你 。（名词分句——宾语从句转换为汉语并列句） （3） It worried her much that her daughter should stay up so late.她很着急，因为她女儿很晚都不睡觉。 （名词分句——主语从句转换为状语从句）
英语句子中如出现多个状语，一般按"方式状语+地点状语 +时间状语"的次序来排列，地点状语或时间状语之间的排列 顺序一般是从小到大；而在汉语句中却常相反。例如： （1） They played chess in high spirits at the club yesterday. 他们昨天在俱乐部高兴地下棋。 （2） She lives at 34 Rue Temple, Geneva, Switzerland. 她住在瑞士日内瓦唐普尔大街34号。 英语的定语既可前置、又可后置，而汉语的则只能前置。 例如： useful books有用的书 a man of fifty years old五十岁的人
B、条件状语从句
可相应译成表示条件或表示假设的分句，例如翻译成:“如果，要是 ”等引导的分句。 5. Sometimes this fall，if all goes well，a revolutionary new undersea vessel will be lowered gently into the waters of Monterey Bay for its maiden voyage. 今年秋天，如果一切顺利的话，一只革命性新潜艇将轻轻在蒙特 利海湾下水，进行它的第一次航行。 6. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor，it cannot save the few who are rich. 自由社会要是不能帮助众多的穷人，也就无法挽救少数富人。 7. The amount of deformation is directly proportional to the applied stress provided the force does not exceed a certain limit. 如果外力不超过某一限度的话，那么形变量与外力成正比。
有时定语从句在逻辑含义上相当于让步、条件、原因、结果等 状语从句，这时就应根据句子内部的逻辑关系，用相应的汉语偏 正复句来翻译。 Photographs are taken of starts ,the light of which is too faint to be seen by eyes at all. 虽然许多星体的光线非常微弱，肉眼 根本看不见，但它们的照片还是被拍下来了。（让步） In 1952 London had a very bad four—day smog in which 4,000 bronchitis sufferers died . 1952年，伦敦曾经连续四天烟 雾弥漫，结果造成4000名支气管患者死亡。（结果） We know that a cat, whose eyes can take in many more rays of light than our eyes, can see clearly in the night. 我们知道，由 于猫的眼睛比我们人的眼睛能吸收更多的光线，所以猫在黑夜也 能看得很清楚。（定语分句——原因）
（4） Differences between the social systems of states shall not be an obstacle to their approachment and co-operation.各国社会制度不 同，但不应妨碍彼此接近与相互合作。（转换成汉 语偏正复句的转折句） （5） This was an intelligently organized and fervent meeting in a packed Town Hall, with Mr. Strong in the chair.这是一次精心组织起来的会议 。市政厅里济济一堂，热情洋溢，主持会议的是斯 特朗先生。（转换成两个汉语句子）
二、英语句子翻译
翻译句子首先要对句子结构进行语法分析，这既包括上 节词语层翻译中所讲的词类、词义分析，也包括句类（简单 句、并列句还是复合句）分析、句子间各主要部分（如主句 、从句、上下句）逻辑关系分析、句子的语用功能和语体分 析及其它相关背景知识的综合分析，翻译文学作品时还不能 忘记句子的艺术分析（主要是修辞手段和情感表达效果分析 ）。在正确理解句意后，用恰当的译入语将句义（各种意义 ）最大限度地表达出来。一般来讲，句子的译法可以是：一 、亦步亦趋，二、化整为零（分译），三、调整句序、词序 。从语言层次的转换情况来看，英语句子翻译成汉语既可是 同一层次的同类型转换，也可是同一层次的非同类型转换， 还可以是超越同一层次的转换。
B定语从句的翻译
英语定语从句的翻译可根据其结构、功能和意 义等因素来考虑。定语从句较短，限制能力较强 的可译作前置定语，反之就可译作后置的并列分 句：对结构较简单且含有定语从句的复句，有时 还可译成简单句。例如：
（1） John liked my sister, who was warm and pleasant.他喜欢我那热情欢快的妹妹。（定语分句 ——前置定语） （2）We wish to express our satisfaction at this to the Special Committee , whose activities deserve to be encouraged. 关于这点，我们要对特别委员会 表示满意，它的活动应当受到鼓励。（后置）
翻译层次
3.2 句子
• 句子（sentence）是比词语更高一级 的语法层次，是能够单独存在并能表 达相对完整意义的语言单位。一般说 来，交际活动都是以句子为基本语言 单位展开的，因此句子在翻译过程中 占有最重要的位置，必须予以高度重 视。
