I. Introduction of Language Transfer
The study of Language Transfer Theory can date back to the year of 1950s. It is based on Universal Grammar Theory, Behaviorism Stimulus-Response Theory,ContrastiveAnalysis Hypothesis Theory of Chomsky and the recent Language Symbolic Theory .Then it respectively went through the early Behaviorism Transfer Theory of Mother Language Habit, the middle Position Theory of Mentalist minimum influence and the recent Cognitive Theory of Transfer Restriction. Since 1960s, the research of the second language acquisition began to cover so wider realm that psychology, sociology and pedagogy are allusingit which makes it an interdisciplinary rising discipline. In terms of mental linguistics and application linguistics, language transfer is not only a simple language phenomenon but a complicated cognitive process. Therefore linguists at different times and fields may give different definitions. Odlin defines itasthe influence of mother language on target language andthat borrowsfromtarget language. It also refers to the influencewhichis caused by similarities and differences between target language andtheacquired languages or learning languages. Schachter, however, from the angle of cognitive psychology and generative grammar, regards language transfer as the restrictiononlanguage learning. That is to say, knowledge acquired beforemayrestrict the second language acquisitionand this restrictionis transfer. Then Faerch and Kasper focus on the mental aspect of language transfer. They consider it as a mental process during which interlanguage is activated and target language is acquired finally. Though the research of language transferplaces emphasis oninteractionamong cross-languages, most researches still think it’s the influence of mother language on foreign language learning or the second language acquisition. As a result, language transfer is always named as “Mother Language Transfer”.
