2) Bar chart
Bar chart, also called bar graph, is used to present and compare data.
There are two types of bar chart: horizontal bar chart and vertical bar chart.
A bar chart consists of several rectangular bars with length or height proportional to the value that they represent.
In a horizontal bar chart, value is represented by the length of the bar as measured by the x-axis, and category labels are displayed on the y-axis.

Analysis:
Sample – A pie chart
The two pie charts show the proportion of three types of distribution channels in 2011 and 2013 respectively. In 2011, 46.1% of the products were sold in large supermarket, 45.5% in small shops, and 8.4% through other outlet. In 2013, the supermarket share increased to 60.6%, the small shops decreased to 34.3%, and the other outlet dropped to 5.1%.
Principles
1) Identify the purpose of the chart. 2) Select the chart that serves the purpose best. 3) Decide the data for the chart. 4) Accurately show the facts. 5) Complement parameters presented in the text. 6) Clearly show any trend in the data. 7) Add title and category labels. 8) Make the chart simple and uncluttered. 9) Make the size of category proportional to its value. 10) Attract the readers’ attention.
The figures show that the large supermarket is the main distribution channel of the products. The turnover occupies over 50% of the total sales volume.
Categorization
1) Pie chart 2) Bar chart 3) Line chart 4) Flow chart 5) Organization chart
1) Pie chart
It is used to represent values of variables.
It is displayed in circles that are divided into segments reflecting the proportion of the variables.
It is also used to supplement text to help readers in understanding of particular concept.
It may present information quickly and directly, and make the concept more clear or interesting.
Analysis:
The above vertical bar chart shows clearly the sales volume of a certain car in China from 2005 to 2013. The number gradually decreased from 2005 to 2009, but started increasing from 2009. 2009 saw the lowest sales volume, while 2013 the highest.
It shows how some particular data change at equal interval of time.
The value of data is represented by the height of the point as measured by the y-axis, and category labels are displayed on the x-axis.

An oval represents start or end point, a rectangle represents a step of process, and a diamond represents a decision.
A circle stands for an operation, a triangle stands for storage, and a square represents inspection.
In a vertical bar chart, the categories appear on the x-axis, and the height of bar corresponds to the value of each category.
3) Line chart
A line chart displays a series of data points connected by straight line segments.
5) Organization chart
An organization chart reveals the overall structure of an organization.
It enables one to visualize a complete organization by means of the picture it presents.
Sample – A line chart
Analysis:
In the line chart above, the three curve lines display respectively the profit of a chain restaurant in three different areas from 2009 to 2013. The chart shows that although the profit increased year by year in all the three areas, the downtown area is the best place to make a profit.
It is used in business and economics to make the readers easily understand large quantities of data and the relationship between different parts of the data.
4) Flow chart
A flow chart represents the workflow of an organization.
