I find that some students are not able to use the linking words or phrases like “however, although, despite, even though, in spite of, on the other hand, therefo re, etc” correctly. If we apply them to our articles correctly, we are able to read and write well. Please look at the sentences on the screen and then rewrite it using “although, even though, however, on the other hand, therefore”.The teacher shows the sentence on the screen.Some people find the idea of taking people off life support machines terrible.Others don’t mind doing this if the patient doesn’t improve after many years. T: W e can say “Although some people find the idea of taking peo ple off life support machines terrible, others don’t mind doing this if the patient doesn’t improve after many years.”Step Ⅱ SpeakingThis part is designed to train students’ speaking ability.Get the students to read the article and match these headings with the paragraphs A-D. Encourage students to discuss them in pairs or in groups.Have the students complete the text with these linking words and phrases.Step Ⅱ WritingThis part provides students with a chance to practise their writing ability. The students are going to write a discursive essay with the title: “Should Smoking BeBanned?” They are told how to write a discursive essay following the stages on the screen.Stage 1Work in pairs to brainstorm ideas and list as many arguments as possible—both for and against banning smoking.For: Government would save money on medical treatment.Against: Government would lose money from tax on cigarettes.Stage 2 Work individually and decide what your opinion is. Write notes for four paragraphs.Stage 3 Use your notes to write the essay.Stage 4 Check the notes.The students are expected to apply what they have learned to practical use by writing an essay about whether to smoke or not. After the students finish writing this essay, they are asked to read each other’s essays and assess them. This section aims to allow students to determine what they have achieved, and what else they can do in order to improve.Step Ⅲ ListeningT: There is a picture here. What kind of programme do you think it is, a chat show, a documentary, a panel discussion or a game show?S: A panel discussion.T: Right. A panel discussion is a kind of TV programmes in which a group of people are chosen to take part with an audience to discuss some topics.Get students to listen and complete Exx. 2-4 according to what they have heard on the tape and then check the answers with the whole class.Step Ⅳ HomeworkFor more practice, students can do the exercises on page 88 and page 89, so they can become familiar with the usage of the linking words or phrases in an article. 这种句式较为复杂,因为它主句和从句的动词时、体形式和它们所表示的实际时间不符合,这些对学生学习造成一定困难。

(注)美国英语的主句,不管主语是什么人称,皆常用would。
与现在事实相反:条件从句的谓语用动词的过去式( be一般用were ),主句的谓语用would( should , could , might ) +动词原形。
If I were you, I shouldn’t do that.如果我是你,我就不那么做。
If everyone in the country knew first aid, many lives would be saved.如果每一个国人都懂得急救,那么许多人的生命是可以挽救的。
与将来事实相反:条件从句的谓语用动词的过去式( be一般用were ),或should + 动词原形或were to + 动词原形,主句的谓语用would ( should , could , might ) + 动词原形。
If he came tomorrow, we could ask him.如果他明天来,我们就能问问他。
If it should rain, the crop would be saved.如果天下雨的话,庄稼就有救了。
If it were to snow tomorrow, they would not go out.如果明天下雪,他们就不去了。
与过去事实相反:条件从句的谓语用 had + 过去分词,主句的谓语用would ( should , could , might ) + have + 过去分词。
