2.对译者的要求
在对译者的要求方面，林语堂认为翻译艺术所依赖的有
三条：
第一是对原文文字上及内容上透彻的了解; 第二是译者有相当的国文程度，能写清顺畅达的中文; 第三是译事上的训练，译者对于翻译标准及手术的问题 有正确的见解。
3.翻译标准
忠实、通顺和美。
“faithfulness”，“expressiveness” and“ beauty ” 1.忠实标准： 忠实的程度大致可以分为四等: 直译、死译、意译 和胡译。 四义：非字译、须传、非绝对、须通顺 2.通顺标准: 以句义为先, 字义为后。与此同时, 林氏还提出句 译理论, 主张翻译只能以句为主体的 句译, 不能以字为主 体的字译。 第一，须以句为本位；第二，须完全根据中文心理。 3.美的标准: 翻译还有美的方面须兼顾。理想的翻译家应当将其 工作当做一种艺术。以爱艺术之心爱它, 以对艺术谨慎不苟 之心对它, 使翻译成为美术之一种。
