Ode to the West WindBy Percy Bysshe Shelley (August 4,1792 – July 8,1822)I1O wild West Wind,2thou breath of Autumn's being, 3 Thou, from whose unseen presence4the leaves dead 5 Are driven, like ghosts6from an enchanter7fleeing,Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red, 8 Pestilence-stricken multitudes: O thou, 9Who chariotest to their dark wintry bed 10The winged seeds, where they lie cold and low,Each like a corpse within its grave, untilThine azure sister of the Spring shall blow 11Her clarion o'er the dreaming earth, and fill 12(Driving sweet buds like flocks to feed in air)With living hues and odours plain and hill: 13Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere; 14Destroyer and preserver; hear, O hear!II15Thou on whose stream, mid the steep sky's commotion, 16 Loose clouds like earth's decaying leaves are shed, Shook from the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean, 17Angels of rain and lightning: there are spread 18 On the blue surface of thine airy surge,Like the bright hair uplifted from the headOf some fierce Maenad, even from the dim verge 19 Of the horizon to the zenith's height 20The locks of the approaching storm. Thou dirge 21Of the dying year, to which this closing nightWill be the dome of a vast sepulchre,Vaulted with all thy congregated might 22Of vapours, from whose solid atmosphereBlack rain, and fire, and hail will burst: O hear!III23Thou who didst waken from his summer dreams 24 The blue Mediterranean, where he lay,Lulled by the coil of his crystalline streams, 25Beside a pumice isle in Baiae's bay, 26And saw in sleep old palaces and towers Quivering within the wave's intenser day, 27All overgrown with azure moss and flowersSo sweet, the sense faints picturing them! Thou 28 For whose path the Atlantic's level powers 29Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below 30 The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear The sapless foliage of the ocean, knowThy voice, and suddenly grow grey with fear, 31 And tremble and despoil themselves: O hear! 32IV33If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear;If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee;A wave to pant beneath thy power, and shareThe impulse of thy strength, only less freeThan thou, O uncontrollable! If even 34I were as in my boyhood, and could beThe comrade of thy wanderings over heaven, 35As then, when to outstrip thy skyey speed 36 Scarce seemed a vision; I would ne'er have striven 37As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need. 38Oh! lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud!I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed!A heavy weight of hours has chained and bowed 39 One too like thee: tameless, and swift, and proud. V40Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is: 41What if my leaves are falling like its own!The tumult of thy mighty harmonies 42Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone,Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce,My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one! 43Drive my dead thoughts over the universe 44Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth; And, by the incantation of this verse, 45Scatter, as from an unextinguished hearthAshes and sparks, my words among mankind!Be through my lips to unawakened earthThe trumpet of a prophecy! O, Wind, 46If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
